Would you buy a used M8 now?

I'd say go for it. I did recently, replacing my R-D1. I can not afford the M9, and even the M8u and M8.2 are a lot more expensive. Yes, the M8 has it's limitations, but which camera hasn't? I use it mostly with one lens with ir cut filter and at iso < 1250, within those bounds it works very well, it is making me use my m6 a lot less. But I agree what a lot of people here say: depends on the price. I could get mine for a reasonable price, but I also realise for that price I could almost get an eos 5DII. But since using rangefinders, I do not like dslr's anymore.

I have seen some decent priced M8's show up on pop flash, at least those have some sort of safety if something goes wrong early on.

I still highly prefer RF to SLR's so thats a no brainer for me but the reason I would get rid of the M6 for it is because of film costs and difficulties here dealing with it. Sure a mechanical Leica is a great thing but....

Also the top shutter speed thing does not bother me at all, my M6 tops out at 1000 and I have probably only used it a couple times, doesnt mater.

I really want to use my Zeiss lenses on digital, they are so neat and I think work well on digi.

Then again since I want a viewfinder so muc I could save myself a lot of money and just get a Canon Ixus 100 IS....har har....

The M8 still takes great photos. As time passes this won't change. (assuming it doesn't break)

So... Absolutely yes.
If you can find a good one with a warranty then go for it.

Do you really need full frame capability? It would be nice to have but do you really need it?
Be sensible. The M8 is a fine product with a great future.

Just to make the point there is a 5.24 Megapixel Digilux 2 on E bay at the moment. About 7 years old.

The M8 is a great camera. I love mine. I'd love an M9 more, probably, but the M8 takes great, great pictures. I love the 8000 shutter speed, and I love the size, weight, and general performance of the camera. Much more than the D90 that I sold.

M8 is, I think, the place to be for the middle-class Leica user that wants to go digital. M9 is just silly expensive, and the M8 has a far worse a reputation than it deserves, which makes prices, now that the M9 is out, reasonable.

I like my M8 a lot (I also have an M2). I bought it used, and aside from a rangefinder adjustment, it's been fine. I say go for it.

Yup! I am dead serious about selling it, in fact I am selling it at a loss because of maintenance and such.

And if someone wants to trade me a M8 for it plus cash why not, I have other film cameras to fall back upon and the M8 is just too tempting.

Going rate for a clean used M8.2 (with all boxes and accessories) in US is closer to $3500, with some dealers still over $4000 (nuts to me, but they seem to sell). Prices might drop as more M9s hit the market.

Yup! I am dead serious about selling it, in fact I am selling it at a loss because of maintenance and such.

And if someone wants to trade me a M8 for it plus cash why not, I have other film cameras to fall back upon and the M8 is just too tempting.

I have got an M8 in January and since that I have neglected my M6 as well.
Feel bad about it. I am having a dilemma whether to sell off my precious M6 to get a lens or not.
But now I am a bit worried looking at how the price drop on the M8.

I like the M8 because its digital & got the M feel but I still like the handling of my M6.
At the moment, I couldn't afford a M9, so this is how my situation is.

To be honest, I wouldn't trade my 7 year old Canon 10D for an M8. It just seems too far behind other digital cameras. Sure the lenses are better than most others, but I don't mind using non-leica glass.

i'm happy with the m8 i got. originally i was waiting (saving up) for an m8.2, but got a plain old original, one owner m8, which came with a sixty day warranty from my dealer. i had to send it in for shutter lock up in continuous mode problem and it came back with a clean bill of health and a one year leica warranty.
even though it isn't the m9 full frame, it is a more affordable camera that gives superb results, and is a lot of fun to shoot with.

I hear that, the price drop of the M8 is good for buying bad for selling, but if I get an M8, barring disastrous problems, I plan on hanging onto it for a few years. By then if I want to sell it then I know I will take a loss, just like my M6, I am taking a pretty big loss selling it but its time for it to go, I would take a bigger loss if it just sat around in my dry box for the next 5 years.

I had a 10D - unfortunately the files, which I thought great at the time, are about seven lightyears behind the M8 files. Not to mention the M9....
