I can't imagine why anyone would seriously picking an RD1 over a digital Leica IF money was not the issue.

One big thing missing on the Monochorome:
The rewind lever for holding the camera..
Also the interface and the fnon-lippable screen would make some impact to me.

If you have the money for the monochrome why not keep the rd1 for colour and crop "benefit".
It makes more out of your lenses.
If you want one camera only you could go for an M9. Prices have been falling and it does beautiful bw too with some basic post processing, AND colour of course.

I would not. Only b/c the MM apparently has the M8/M9 shutter recocking that is LOUD as H*LL. But if the MM had the apparently newer and quieter shutter recocking as in the M-E and M240, then I may think differently.

I had an R-D1, briefly. As much as I find it an amusingly funky design, in use I found its charming wind lever and other controls irritating and clumsy. As soon as I picked up an M9, I felt like I was holding a real camera again.
I know lots of folks love the R-D1, but in my hands it did nothing for me. The MM would be like having all the goodness of my M9 but dedicated to super high quality B&W. I'd love that.

As long as it is not remarkably louder than the XPAN shutter/advance noise I could live with it.

I played with my friend's RD-1.
Shutter sound + loudness is acceptable.
Comparable to the XPAN I have.
6MP is fine. Crop factor does not bother me.
The RD-1 appeals to me...

I seen great works by people who uses the MM.
But I think it is because they got the SKILL.
Not because their camera is a MM.
I think a M8 or M9 or RD-1 will sing in their hands too.

I've handled most of them, even for a 30 min hands-on on the M240
the original M8 shutter is rather loud 'clack' followed by a rather loud recocking sound (but has the benefit of being the ONLY 1/8000 shutter speed M-mount camera ever made. so still kind of unique..)
the M8.2 or M8u shutter is noticably more silent (1/4000 limit) and well damped compared to original M8.
the M9 shutter is more silent than original M8, but a tad more noisy than M8.2 (impression for this could be that the M8.2 is better built than the M9) don't know.
never handled an M9P, i suppose it's similar to M8.2 shutternoise,
M-E is exactly identical to M9 shutter no difference
M240 sounds different than all the above (about as silent as the M8.2) but different more 'techy' sound more like a Nex (sorry but it's true...)

I'd replace my R-D1 if offered a Leica M or even M9, if offered.
Full Frame sensor's call is strong...
An M8 on the other hand, I don't think so, probably not.
But since it'll never happen I'm glad to have my R-D1 by my side!
