would you trade in your RD-1 + CV lens for a fuji X100

I wouldn't trade one for the other.

However, I want to get my hands on the x100 for low-light event shooting, but will still use the R-D1 for street shooting. I have tried the Epson for event shooting and if the lighting hasn't been set-up for TV cameras, I can't use it.

I know my answer is like jumping with both feet into a mud pit, it's going to splash...
I would sell the R-D1 and the X100 for good Ol' film gear.
I love film and metal and not so much virtual binary digits as they are too easily lost

a bit of a gear nut ....

a bit of a gear nut ....

Fair enough, In terms of coupled rangefinders 135, I've had the RD-1, Bessa-R, M6, Bronica 645.

The Contax G1, Fuji 645 and Fuji 645 Zi are tweeners not really coupled rangefinders a la Leica, but not SLR either.

My Polaroid 4X5 conversion and Speed Graphic are both range finders. But with a great big ground glass.

I have had a Nikon FM, F100 and F3A.

When I started shooting film, I also taught my self how to develop B&W.

I shot a D50 and a D80 to expected shutter life. Had my wife not dropped my D300, I would not have upgraded to the D7000.

In the mirorless world I have and EP-1 and a G1.

I just signed the PO on a P30+ for my Mamiya AFD-II.

I've added it up for insurance purposes, and its a bit out of hand.

That said, none of these are shelf queens. I use my gear! The issue is that lately, most of my shooting time has been spent in the studio, using the MFDB.

drop intohttp://www.private.jonesii.net/dads_index.htm for my studio work, pass is matrix and user is Guest, lots of nudes .... don't go there if you don't like that. In 2010, I did 30 studio shoots, and am on pace for 36 this year. Models, strobes, the whole 9 yards.

I also do almost all my kids sports teams, a sport called cowboy mounted shooting, and on the side, the occasional photography class at Rice university.

All that said, I live in Houston, and the street shooting here simply sucks, it takes people on the street to make that genre work, and we are the AC capital of the know world! That coupled with my day job, and limited shooting time make me wonder if "trading in" an old toy for the new might not get me re-invigorated for street. Done it with the RD-1 and the G1/EP-1, lots of fun. Still would be with those cameras, I do have a Paris/Amsterdam trip this summer, so the trade in question ....

Thanks for all the above responses!

haha the jaguar to toyota comment made me :)

I'd kee it. But definitely sell it if you do decide to switch. Trading would be throwing money down the drain

This would not be a deal for me.
The X100 has a higher nominal resolution, giving you a bump from bliss A4 to bliss A3 prints without much work.

The X100 cuts the fantastic manual focussing with a rangefinder.
The X100 doesn't let you mount your favorite lenses, nor does it allow you, to try other great lenses, you mare curious about.
The X100 seems, as mentioned, to be not sorted.

If the files behave in any way similar to Nikon D300 files, I have worked with, the R-D1 just delivers more beautiful files out of the box at rated ISO speeds.

I would not trade in.

I wouldn't even think about not doing it.. if it's sitting there collecting dust, just sell it and get something new to refresh your enthusiasm.
I'm sure there are some RD-1 fans here who would love a second body in case of calamity ;)

I wouldn't. I considered adding the X100 to my setup when the first news were released, but my interest started fading pretty quickly. The R-D1 on the other hand is a camera I always love going back, although I mostly use my M8.

I was wondering about this. I think I will keep the R-D1S, because, as said, it's a very special camera. if I can afford the Fuji, why not ?

But the comming of this fuji on the market made me think about something.

Can you imagine a cooperation beetween Fuji for the finder technology, Nikon for the 24/36 sensor, and epson for the image processing ?

If this camera come on the market with no stratospherical prices, I will switch on it.

I truly think that if a few of you actually used the Fuji for a few days, you'd see it isn't as horrible as you think. I understand the love of rangefinders, but this is the next best thing and delivers in IQ completely.

They may look similar, but they're very different cameras. Up to you. Because the RD-1 is so old, I would. But that's me. The X100 offers one Leica quality lens in a compact package, and full manual operation.

I have an X100 and I used to have an RD1. I frequently rue selling the RD1. Both cameras mean dealing with compromises and how one deals with these is entirely personal. This is not really an either or scenario. The cameras are complementary. I'd happily own both, but would find it difficult to choose between them.

Shouldn't this have been posed as a poll?

My take? Yes I want an X100, but no I would not trade in my R-D1 for it.

IQ on the R-D1 is better than on the GF1 with the same lenses, IMHO. And I love my GF1 too.

I find when I pick up a camera with auto focus I feel frustrated. I keep thinking I'm going to love to use a compact that I always have with me. I have tried Sigma's DP2, and Ricoh GRDs. My guess is the same thing will happen with the X100. When it was announced I wasn't that excited because usually Im so let down when it doesn't work like a traditional rangefinder.
that being said, see if you can try a X100 and then make a decision
