I am noticing the the used market for X100 cameras is substantial and the prices are dropping.Is this the nature of digital cameras in general or is the X100 a fading star.

The truth is that the camera produces very nice images and will continue to do so.
The market for digi cams will tell you that it is a senior citizen, no longer the hot new fad, therefore "obsolete" to the fancy people who only sell, not use cameras.

... I hope the price drops a considerable amount so I can afford a second hand one. I don't think I would ever buy a brand spankin' new digital camera. It seems like throwing money in to a burning pit. A couple of years, and maybe the X100 will be a couple hundred dollars once its discontinued.

Remember that originally x100s were selling for above their recommended price on the 'bay and elsewhere. Perhaps they had not reached the appropriate second hand price based on the quality of the product. Also, those cameras going for sale have likely had a little more use.
I bought the camera new, when the choice was to buy the X100 or to hold out for a Nikon D7000. What I have bought is a beautiful piece of engineering that is easy to take photos with and fulfills all my requirements, and I know that it has never been mishandled or dropped. Had I bought the camera for work or for some more technical use, I would certainly have bought second hand, however, it was bought for its ergonomics and mode of operation, so I wanted something in perfect condition that I will keep as such. That's not to say I bought my Zorki or my Fed the same way!

Seems like the used market for every digital camera that's readily available is substantial. I guess it's just the nature of the digital beast, but there are always more M9s and such for sale than I'd expect for such a major purchase.
The X100 has some quirks, but by and large I don't see any glaring flaws with the camera, relative to anything else on the market.

The X100 is not for everyone. I think the initial rush to buy it left many buyers wondering why the camera isn't just like their film cameras, or their DSLRs, etc.. The camera got a lot of hype in the early days. Once all this dies down, I think the X100 will be seen as one of the really interesting landmarks in the history of camera development.
As far as prices? If Fuji pushed no further in this concept, then you'll have another R-D1 scenario where the camera holds its value as a 'cult' camera. On the other hand, if Fuji builds follow-on cameras (including the rumored interchangeable version), then I think the prices of used X100s will come down just like most other quality digital gear.
To buy one now? Well, one could sit around waiting for a year or more for something to happen re: prices or new models. But then that's a year or more of not being out there creating beautiful images.

Here in NZ i think they started off at around NZ$1800.00 then dropped a few months later to NZ$1600.00 I have seen them sell on the auction site here for around NZ$1000. When the X200 or X100.1 comes out I guess they will go a little lower.

Who cares. Why buy a camera if you're already thinking about selling it? Mine is 3 months old and if I sold it right now I would have lost about $100 on it.
It's an amazing camera, the images from it far surpass what you can get from scanned 35mm film in technical IQ - even with a good coolscan scanner, so really, the only reason why you'd need to sell it is if you wanted a different type of camera...

Personally, I wouldn't buy a used x100 because I think this is a camera that needs the full warranty intact thanks to the sticky aperture blades problem, which seems pretty common... mine's been in for repair, along with many others it seems. Fine print on the warranty card says they'll only fix it from the original owner.
That said, I love mine and don't care about current prices because I probably won't ever sell it.

+1000 I'd rather have a camera that I love using so much that by the time I sell its worn out and worth only pennies on the dollar then one that's in prestene condition due to lack of use.
BTW on average the digital camera's I've owned have cost me about $20-25 a month or about the cost of shooting 3-4 rolls of Portra a month.

A little OT but I have an old digital camera, all of 4mp and it still takes photos just as well as it did when it was new all those years ago so I guess if you like the X100 now there is no reason not to be still using it in 10 years time. It looks like a nice camera alas none of the stores around here carry them.

I've just not fallen for my x100. I was thinking about selling, but the used prices are putting me off. Might keep it and let it gather dust while I shoot XA4, Mju II or Yashica T4.

Used cameras, that are in stock in stores, always sell for 70-80% of its new price (Leica being the exception at times). Why do people always single out the X100 like it is some anomoly?
