This was a color shot that I downloaded online from the X100. I was able to manipulate the file in CS4 (convert to black and white) creating dramatic effects without any loss in quality. All I can say is WOW!!!! For me, the X100 is a must buy!

All I can say is WOW!!!! For me, the X100 is a must buy!

I fail to see anything in that shot and others presented in this site that distinguish that camera from others and make it a 'must buy'. The X100 thing on RFF has turned into collective hysteria.

Leica Envy?

Leica Envy?

Don't know if it is a must buy but certainly looks exciting. I wonder how many people on this site put it down because it does not have a red dot on it. Do they feel threatened by a camera that cost 1/6th as much as an M9 and certainly seems to handle high ISO better. And how many of those same people swear by the 35 Summicron or Summilux?

Can only agree. It's just about the graet retro look of the body.
All 10+ MP digital camra's are pretty good for what they are.

So has the hater's collective dissaproval of anyone being excited about this camera. If you dont like it, then it may be a good idea to stay out of the X100 area?

Well i do not hate but do not get the excitement either. May i still look in once in a while?

It's all about style!

Maybe it doesn't offer much more than any other ten megapixel doodad ... but they don't look like this thing!

:D

In other news, find attached a random picture I downloaded from Wikipedia. I was able to convert it into black & white in Paint.NET creating dramatic effects.

Please tell me that your post is a joke.

EDIT: Sucked in, hook line and sinker :D

I am hooked too, but this BW conversion probably isn't a very convincing justification for the fascination many of us are experiencing.

Even if the original picture might indeed have lots of image information hidden in the raw file, this high-res data was already lost when the image got converted to 8-bit jpg.

I think this project ought to be repeated by starting with a RAF file. It is only then that we will be able to really tell the hidden potential that this camera's image files might offer.

Don't tell anyone around where you live that you work with RAF files, otherwise they'll put you in jail.

my must buy is the m9, will save for it. having all the M lenses I do now... its no sense to go with this camera and a fixed lens.

I find it interesting that no one has mentioned how the in-camera bw mode of X100 performs... I guess that says a lot about X100 fans, they're not the hardcore bw street photography crowd.

Question of time. At the moment everybody is relying on pictures on Flickr and blogs posted by about three people.

Wait for it to hit the market, and you'll see the stream of B&W cats and bookshelves rolling in.

or they choose to use RAW.

People who are serious about getting good b/w pictures shoot in RAW. That's why we don't care what the in-camera/jpeg b/w looks like.
