x100 vs. the x100s

Might want to wait a few days for reports on the updated firmware for the X100. If it does what they say, my preference would be to spend half the price and get an X100.

it will be interesting to see if they shortened the focus throw along with the added peaking. That would make manual use an actual option for the X100 (other than using the AF-L button as a Contax G1-type of manual focus).

I had the X1-Pro and did not like the look of the raw files through photoshop - gray pavement had rainbow details! - Seems like Capture One Pro 7 solves this nicely. Also takes care of the shadow noise. I got a black X100 since the real goal was to replace a Contax G1 with 35mm f/2. The x100 files did not have the problem the X Pro 1 had, and I can use my older Photoshop to open them. (Altough I am thinking of getting Capture One since it seems to be a great way to go).

The only real issue I have with the x100 is the focus speed. Remember, this is all being compared to a Contax G1 with 35mm f/2 which I am shooting side by side. The G1 seems faster to focus and shoot AND i have black tape over the red light. The X100 does seem to take the "one potato - half potato" line that Kai uses - it's just slow to lock on. New firmware on the 10th I believe, so I would not make any jump until then. The 23mm f/1.4 seems to pricey since you can get the whole X100 for this or less, even with some warranty.

I do like the frameline shooting of the X100 and the high iso performance is excellent. It's just a little light (compared to G1 kit) and slow to focus. I have not tried the x100s - for what they want for that I would go back to the X Pro-1. It seemed too light as well.

And the new firmware should make the old x100 stellar...so why spend more $$$ on the s...
 
i think the non x-trans sensor is more reliable and if faster AF and newer EVF are not important to you, then i would go with the cheaper X100. and although some people like the new Q button, it seems to have taken the space for a programmable button which i find negative.
 
I had an X100 and liked it; sold it to buy the X100s because I liked the x-trans sensor in other fujis that I have. I prefer the X100s; really fast autofocus, nice clear evf and I like the Q button (my XE-1's have it). Also, it is about one stop better in low light- ISO 6400 is useable on the X100s, not so much on the X100. Focus peaking and split-image manual focus are nice, but I never use them. The x-trans sensor really shines if you use Capture One Pro 7; not so great in Lightroom (greens have "smearing"). Adobe just can't seem to get a handle on the interpolation; Capture One has nailed it. The X100s is the camera I use most now, simply because I always have it. Either camera will serve you well, but I'm sold on the X100s.

I have your old x100 as it did not fit your style.
Are you looking for the focal length? The Size and fixed lens? An RX100 replacement?
I loved the camera from the first moment. Maybe I'll add a future model if the Focal length is different.
AF speeds with FW that had been released since you last held this one are much faster already.
If your just looking for a 23mm I would spend the extra dough on a 23 for your xe 1.
If it's having the full x100 package of small size, OVF, fixed lens, and Leaf shutter. Save the dough and get a used X100 "Classic".
It gives you a different look and a smaller file size that honestly has become an attribute that I personally appreciate. I'm sure others do to.

i think i sold the x100 to go back to the rd1...i liked the x100 but was feeling remorseful re. the rd1...that's all gone now.
i'm looking for something to shoot/carry to work for lunch times/after work type shooting or for when i'm out & about but still want a camera.
the xpro1 was too big for that.
an x100/x100s should be better...but maybe the xm1 with the 27 might be good too??

In that case...I don' think you can beat the x100 for balance of attributes. Carry around, creative control, and final image quality all top of class.
Plus never forget… Leaf Shutter 😀

As Andy points out about what is really going here w/ where u are headed w/ this. If u need faster af speed then even what your xp1/xe1 can focus lock at, the x100s is probably the way to go. But as others have said wait first to c how much better the x100 af speed is prior to deciding.

Outside of the obvious sensor difference, faster CPU and af speed, it really still essentially the same camera. Right now x100 are almost half off used..

U mentioned the xm1 in a prior portion of this thread.. Why even worry about it, unless it is combining the 23f1.4 to a xm1 body?? Yes, close to even price, but u don't have the ovf/evf anymore plus u have lost the basic UI that makes the Fuji experience what it is.

My x100 is from the first batch to come to the west coast... Still going strong. Not planning to sell it for a x100s.

Agree with F16. Think the x100(s) will a great all around.

Also, if fuji is still updating the x100 with a new firmware even with the x100s out, fuji is definitely going improve the x100s on top of the hardware upgrades it improved on the x100 in the future. Matter of taste, and money.
 
Had x100(with latest firmware), and have x100s: focus v fast in good light, about the same in low light. X100s has "q" menu, focus spot moving is now done with right thumb, and AF mode button moved the s/c/m to the right positions. More megapixels.

I've owned the X100 for a couple of years now and I'm still quite happy with the camera. The X100s seems to be an improvement, but not worth the upgrade cost for me. That being said I found that it's just a bit too big (particularly with the hood) for a " shoot/carry to work for lunch times/after work type shooting " camera. Obviously this will vary based on individual preferences, but I ended up going for a Ricoh GR for this type of use and am very happy with it.
