X100F view mode question

Quick question about view modes on the X100F.

On the X100S, you could choose "viewfinder only" for shooting, and playback and menus would appear on the LCD.

On the X100T, choosing "viewfinder only" would result in shooting, playback, and menus to appear in the viewfinder.

Does anyone know the X100F's behavior? I greatly prefer the X100S option, where you can use the camera like a DSLR -- shooting thought the viewfinder and everything else on the LCD. I'm aware of the sensor mode, but I really don't like the lag. I got rid of my X100T because of this but I'm hoping the X100F fixes it.

Then press PLAY and while the camera is in playback set it again.

The camera stores the settings independently between the two modes.

Pretty sure the X100T did this too but I no longer have mine. Many people missed this ability.

Thanks Shawn. I hope that is how it works. If anyone with an X100F could chime in and verify, I think I'll finally pull the trigger.

I have the X100F. Everything including the menus are displayed in finder only in the "Viewfinder Only" mode.

I find it a ridiculous design, and you can't change it in settings, while they managed to leave like 1000 other functions up to you. This is why I feel although "highly customizable” (as they boasted in the marketing literature), the Fuji is lacking some curated experience...

Yes, that's the way it is working on the X100F, too. The camera stores the settings for shooting and playback independently.

@ Archlich: please try setting the view mode during playback, you will notice the difference and will get what you name as "lack of curated experience" ;-)

You know it's not just playback. Menu, Q menu, metering, AF area, flash, anything that require you looking at the display...try changing any of this on the fly in Viewfinder Only and you'll have to stick your eye to the viewfinder awkwardly. Or press View Mode once, change setting, then three times to put it back.

They seriously need to put a user definable "U" setting outthere somewhere. Too busy with all the "retro" dials I guess ("you can have all the control", per marketing literature). Or a mini shoulder display like they managed with the GFX (so that I know what it's doing at waist level, not eye level). Or at least, a firmware update which Fuji had became famous for...

By "curated experience", I mean what the Ricoh GR has been like. Not so much buttons, dials, rings, joystick and switches (everyone of them being "customizable"). It just works. Even with the LCD off, I know by turning from U1 to U2 it's no longer the f/8 daylight JPEG snapping machine fixed at 2.5m but a single point AF, spot metering RAW fine tuner set at ISO 3200 and 1/60 threshold speed. And if you need the flash (I do) just pull the switch. I've tried to do the same with my X100F, but...

I know by making the camera busier Fuji's targeting a broader audience. Or I might be asking to much, although I'm certain it could be done. Or...

You have the custom C settings and you can set those to be changed by any of the programmable buttons on the camera. Likewise metering has its own button, you can assign flash to a button and so on and so forth. Once you set it up it the need to actually go into the menus is rare as you can get to many things directly by programming the buttons. To change the buttons just hold one down for about 4 seconds and it will pop up a display to let you alter its behavior.

i think the phrase you're looking for is "well designed."

curation is the selection of a collection where the meaning of a single object is shaped by its relationships to other objects in the collection, and where the collection itself represents some meaning. lately, businesses have been using it to imply refinement without knowing what it means! :bang:

these uses of the word just need to go out of fashion ASAP. it's silly when another one of its connotations is erudition!

Thanks all for the info. It sounds like playback can be on the LCD but menus may still appear in the viewfinder. I think I can live with this.
