I was curious if anyone has any comments about the different characteristics of these films. Ultimately I'll get a few rolls of each and experiment but I'm just wondering what experiences anyone may have had.

Thanks,

Paul

I have only used XP-2 a little -- 400CN much more. I find the Kodak to be much smoother and better in the shadows. Also easier to scan. It's the one I use.

if i'm wanting less grain and "edge" i prefer kodak. if i want more grain and grit, then i'm for xp-2. both are good, for different things.

Depends on the paper you're printing on. Kodak CN looks great on color paper from a Photoshop. XP is better from printing on black and white paper. I like both but XP approaches a more traditional black and white look. CN has a richer look.

I have used both and prefer the Ilford XP-2 for purely subjective reasons. Strangely, I like the way it scans better.

i like xp2 because it gives me results closer to proper b&w film. bw400cn is a bit more polished like digital. would love to try neopan cn but can't find them here.

I have had good results from all of those films, but, like Jon, I think I prefer the Fuji Neopan 400CN. I tend to use the Kodak and Ilford C-41 films more because they are in the local shops but the Fuji film is really good.

Our local Boots sells both the Kodak and the Ilford chromogenic films. Prices are rubbish [compared to online] but they usually have a 3 for 2 offer on, so the price is only a little more than online and has the advantage that I can buy film on a whim.

When I do pre-order online [which I do fairly often] it tends to be traditional BW film [from Mathers, Retrophotographic or 7DayShop] or colour stuff that I just can't get locally ['pro' films, mostly].

My local shop sells only Fuji 200, and very little indeed of that.

If I want Reala they will get it for me; if I order 100 rolls.

So I tend to use Jaz-uk.

Once a year Lidl sells film, usually Fuji 100. Then I'll visit both local branches and buy their whole stock.

thanks for the link, jon. i've always wanted to try fuji c-41. bookmarked - even though pricey, when i stock up next i'll give them a try.

Where are you getting T400CN? It was discontinued like 5 years ago. It was the best choice at the time, gives full speed whereas XP-2 Super is better at 250-320. BW400CN is different than both, but beautiful in its own way... smoother and richer, even if less bite.
