First trys.

First trys.

I think I'm impressed what you can do with Channel Mixer. The Kodak Photo CD scans were 1536X1024 and I reduced it to 512 when I saved it for web. I think I can go this route until I decide on a scanner. Of course each roll of processing is $15-$25. so a scanner would pay for itself pretty quickly. I'm not sure I would be happy with the Minolta IV without Ice or need to spend the extra for Ice.

Those photo CD scans are better than the ones I have seen. The Minolta 5400 has ICE and saves a lot of time touching up in PS but it increases scan times also. ICE will NOT work with traditional B&W films. For C41 B&W I scan it as a colour neg using ICE then convert to greyscale in PS. I had heard that Channel Mixer was good and seems so from your results.

Nice stuff, Steve. I got a Minolta SD IV without ICE a couple of weeks ago (yet to use it :( ) because I want to use "traditional" thick-emulsion B&W film like HP5.

Don't forget that the photo CD's will hold about 3 rolls of shooting. No need to get one CD per roll, and pay that much more. Also, most of those CD burner's that they use can be cranked up in resolution, if asked to do so. I routinely have the lab burn about 3 rolls per disc.

You'll find the Neopan 400CN, (C-41 chromogenic) to have a bit more contrast than the XP-2. Which is good, IMHO.

Russ is right (don't tell him),
My lab's CD's resolution is good enough to print 8"x10"s.
As for scanning at home, I don't have Digital Ice, but just use canned air to blow off the slides or negs and don't have much problem with dust. If I do get some, it only takes a few seconds to PS it out.:)

It's really hard trying to decide what I want in photos. I really love b&w, thats what I first started out with 35 years ago with a Yashicamat. My friends had nice 35mm Pentax Spotmatics, but I got better pics with the 120 film. I really love color also. Thats why I'm considering just shooting color negs and then deciding what I want later. When I was working in industrial photography 30 years ago, and we needed both color slides an bw, I would sometimes shoot only slides and make internegs for the bw. The interneg wouldn't give quite as subtle of tone range in bw, but when things were busy, you didn't have time to shoot both. The computer and Photoshop changes the equation somewhat. All these tricks don't cover up a lack of vision or laziness though. Concering "ICE", most of my work is clean, but I want to scan some of my dads old Kodachromes family shots taken with his faithful Argus C3, I've heard ice doesn't work with Kodachrome. My dad lives in Florida and theres a big problem with fungus on slides, so I may have some problems.
