Xpro1 to X100s

Hello,

I'm the owner of a X-pro1 for a few months, I like the image quality, the feel of it and the especially the weight! No more heavy DSLR to carry around.
The main reason i got the x-pro1 was because i wanted a way to use my M lenses on a digital body.

But I've been recently more and more annoyed with the manual focus of those lenses. Not that it's awful, but I end up spending my time in EVF and it's not the fastest process either. It's fine but after playing with a x100s at a store today I realised immediately what everybody's talking about, that camera that keeps you shooting.

So here I am, considering getting rid of the x-pro 1 to get the x100s, and here is my question, did any of you guys thought about the same thing ? what made you do the jump or stick with the x-pro 1 ?

Shooting mainly with rangefinder, i don't mind manual focus all that much ... when it's straight forward. And shooting with the x-pro1 makes me want to get a Fuji lens with AF ... which is not going to help my G.A.S.

Any thoughts on that ?

if you are comfortable shooting with only a 35mm FOV (and 28mm with the conversion lens) then go for it.
Both cameras are amazing, the X100s is a fixed-lens camera with a max shutter speed of 1/1000s. It has a built-in ND filter though. And it's silent.

personally, I found the button layouts on the X-Pro1 to be better but once you are shooting you wont really notice it anyway.

why not just buy the 23mm 1.4 or 35mm 1.4 XF lens for your X-Pro1?

If I were u before I give up on the xp1, I would go into a camera store w/ my xp1 and say your interested in buying a Fuji x mount lens and ask if u could try the 23f1.4, 27f2.8 or the 35f1.4 on it.

Since u are looking only at the x100s, I am assuming u are interested in the ovf/evf/LCD experience as opposed to the evf/LCD, otherwise, I would point u toward xe2 or xt1 which not only have better evf (which will help for focus peaking) but much faster af like the x100s. The xt1 has the split image focusing and the best evf out there I believe. I can't remember if xe2 has split (I think it does).

Right now, I don't think we will c a xp2 any earlier then q4 this year. I think reality maybe sometime in 2015. I think they will release it w/ their new organic sensor that they have been working w/ Panasonic on.

Welcome to RFF.

The Fujinon XF lenses are excellent to very good. I understand the appeal of re-purposing M lenses. But I recommend you pick a Fujinon lens with the angle of view you prefer. The 23/1.4 is a stellar performer. The 27/2.8 is slower but it is quite small and it also is an excellent performer.

The X-Pro 1 AF works well with both lenses. The AF generally works better with the EVF than the OVF. Switching between OVF & EVF can be done quickly.

With the popularity of the XT-1, I doubt you will loose a significant amount of money if you decide to sell the Fujinon lenses and pick up a X100s. I prefer the optics of the 23/1.4 over the X100/100s lens. But the difference is small.

Yes I picked up the xpro1 mainly for the ovf that I end up not using. I'm not a big fan of evf in general but yes the new generation is much better. And so is the evf on the x100s.

I did pick up the other lenses and tried them out. Unfortunately the store I did that didn't upgrade their xpro1 beyond 2.0. And the Af on those lenses wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. I considered it decent until I tried the 100s sitting next to it and it felt like... Well it just makes me focus on shooting not on the camera's response.

Let's just say my biggest concern is the fixed 35. Having just finished one year sticking with 35mm only I rediscovered 50mm and felt in love again. I'd say that if the x100s came in a 50mm focal length équivalent I would probably not think twice. I partly want to force myself having a fixed lens ( by the way I only have the xpro1 as digital, but shoot on different film bodies) but I'm wondering about 35mm being right. That's why I asked if anybody made the same kind of jump and had regrets or didn't look back since.

Personally, I think the strength of the X system cameras are in their lens. At least try out the 35mm f/1.4 as it's a really nice lens.

If you're deadset against EVF and want to avoid investing into another lens system, I would pick up an X100S and consider an R-D1 for re purposing your M lenses. This may cure your GAS since you'll be forced to stick with a 35mm equivalent on the Fuji and you can use your existing M lenses with an actual rangefinder on the Epson (which would cost about as much as 2-3 XF lenses).

I'd also consider waiting for an X-T1 if you avoid the R-D1 route, the EVF on that is supposed to be amazing and you'll have the option to invest into the excellent XF lenses down the line.

Agree totally, even Ken Rockwell say's that and it's not often I take him seriously. 😀

After much time experimenting with MF lenses and the X-Pro1 I gave up. AF is what the X system is made for and the lenses are superb, I personally saw no real gain by using my Leica M lenses on it. If you want to zone focus then sure use the Fuji lenses in MF and the back button. Superb method, but no more fannying about for me with other lenses on my Fuji's.

As regards the OP's original comment about considering the X100s then with the announcement today of the new TC lens you can now have the option of 28/35 & 50mm. Mind you, it's a bit of a large beast by the looks of it. I'll pass and just crop with my X100s, the image quality easily stands up to that without any problems.

Size. In addition, the 23mm intrudes into the lower right quadrant of the OVF framelines. Fuji needs a small 23mm f2 lens for the XP1. The 27mm is too slow and lacks an aperture ring. Perhaps that is why they have the 27mm on sale for $199. Is it a prelude to introducing a 23mm f2?
