Y - Strap

BTW, if all you're doing is walking around and taking pictures, Roger is right that traditional neck strap is probably at least as good as any of these cross-body or wrist strap solutions. But if you need your hands free for other activities for which the camera is a danger to itself and others, the cross-body strap is best. For example, if you bend over to pick up something from the ground, a neck-slung camera may make contact with the pavement or the object you're lifting. Or, as I've found personally problematic, if you lean into a car to help a toddler out of the booster seat, the camera swings forward and whacks the poor kid in the head. 🙁

The reason I want a cross-body strap is because, thanks to the wonderful English winter weather, I will have to carry my camera under my coat; add a backpack to the equation and it becomes difficult to pull the camera quickly into a shooting position - the strap tends to grab too much.

I'm using Gordy's "sling" which is basically the same concept as the Y-strap. Very handy for carrying a camera under my winter jacket for example. There is much more room for the camera on the side than in front of the jacket and when I see a photo opportunity I simply unzip my jacket halfway down and grab the camera.

Hey guys,

I own a Y-Strap and I find it definitely has its cons...

1- If you carry a bag with you (like I do at all times), the Y strap is only functional as a cross-strap... its nylon is very smooth so if you plan to use it over one shoulder, it's just not doable. I realise the intended use is for a cross strap, however, so this may not be an issue for you.

2- Because the camera is 'cross-drawn', the keyring itself doesn't really slide up the strap, instead, the keyring physically shifts the entire strap around. This is problematic because the adjustment section of the strap will eventually make its way around your body and it will end up in a less than advantageous spot. This is one advantage of the leica goodies strap.. although that is a one-size fits all strap (which is less true for some. ymmv).

Because of these two problems I find more often than not I either do not use a strap, use a leica goodies sling, or the included leica neckstrap tied into a keyring, which is attached to either a leica goodies hook or onto the lug itself. This allows me to wear it both cross strapped, and use it similarly to the y-strap, or over one shoulder, and thanks to the shoulder pad isn't very likely to shift around.
