...it would have been ten 50mm lenses, but didn't realize I had forgotten my Contax 50mm Sonnar f/1.5 lens, which has the Contax-to-Leica adapter, until I was sitting taking the shots (the other lens was going to be the Helios-103) :bang:
These were all taken with --hold your breath/venom/sarcasm/screams for another thread, please-- an M8 that just arrived from Popflash Photo this Saturday (thanks, Tony!)
I shot all of these RAW, and applied the same settings to all of them, so you could see the main contrast and color rendition differences. Some of them are stronger than others, like the Summar and the Jupiter-3, which turned out with a strong Skylight filter cast, for that's the filter that's attached on them.
There are a few slightly under-exposed shots, for I was shooting in manual mode, and the lighting conditions where changing throughout the afternoon.
The spot I was going to use was closed for "renovations" or something like that, so I chose this spot for a few reasons: the subject doesn't move, there's backlighting, and a horrible background which can break any bokeh (or use whatever word you like) characteristics of the lens. The focusing distance was about 14 feet.
The lenses tested:
50mm Summilux-M pre-asph E46
50mm Summarit f/1.5
50mm J-3 (f/1.5)
50mm J-8 (f/2)
50mm Summitar f/2
50mm Summar f/2
50mm Summicron f/2 (tabbed version, aka IV)
50mm Canon f/1.2 LTM
These were all taken with --hold your breath/venom/sarcasm/screams for another thread, please-- an M8 that just arrived from Popflash Photo this Saturday (thanks, Tony!)

Thanks, Raid.
You know, I just realized, I flipped the Jupiter-3 images. The one that says @ f/2 is really @ f/1.5, and vice-versa. Oy. I'm too tired. Still recharging batteries from last week.

Nobody? Hmm. Alright, maybe it should go to the heap.

Subjectively speaking, I'm surprised how well the Jupiter 3 did. Maybe even better then the Summilux? Cron and Canon 1.2 were my favorites.

Really, you think the J-3 did better than the Summilux? Hmmm.
Now, that is surprising. Perhaps my monitor needs to be recalibrated?
(not being sarcastic -- I may be missing what you're seeing)

Just a cursory exam but the Canon really shines at f1.2 or f2.The Summitar and Summicron at f2 are very nice. The J12 at f2 really surprised me. Thanks for all your effort. I just looked at overall flare and sharpness in the figurine. I may change my mind after more perusal.

Hmm, I'm more interested in where you got the contax-to-leica adapter!

The Summilux looked the best to me followed by the Cannon. The last and first shot. However because your subject was backlit none of the uncoated lenses really had a chance. An interesting test none the less.

Thanks Gabriel! You better watch out though, Raid might be annoyed at the ease of testing with digital.

I thought the Summilux left all behind, but I was surprised by the Summitar, it came very close to the Canon lens.remrf said:The Summilux looked the best to me followed by the Cannon. I still think the Summicron did excellent, if you only compare the wide open shots. Stopped down, the Canon lens is always a pleasant surprise.
I chose a backlit scenario for this specific reason: to see which ones could handle it.

I must admit, this is much easier than having to develop and scan. It is also easier to see the differences between lenses.

Thanks Gabriel.
Like the Tapped Cron most.
Surprise J8 did this well wide open, should be great in B&W.
Any chance doing this again with B&W? or at least PS conversion?

You're welcome; thanks for the input. Yes, I am thinking about doing B&W shots. Will said:Any chance doing this again with B&W? or at least PS conversion?
Hopefully sometime later this week, looks like I'm booked for the next two days with various errands. This time I won't forget the Sonnar
