yellow

Yellow is the color of Oshun, one of the major Santeria orishas or spirits. Santeria is an Afro-Cuban religion with many followers. Oshun is the spirit of the river, luxury, pleasure, sexuality, fertility, and love. My late Cuban ex-girlfriend was Santeria and Oshun was the spirit given to her by her Godmother.

Yellow is also the color of la Virgen de la Caridad (Blessed Virgin Mary) the Patroness of Cuba. This is the famous statue of the Madonna holding the baby Jesus reproduced in many churches as this one. The original statue was found floating in the sea during a storm in 1612 close to Barajagua in eastern Cuba and is now in its own Catholic church near Santiago de Cuba. My Cuban wife, who is not religious, is responsible for the concept and construction of the cultural center commemorating the statue in Barjagua.

While Santeria is not a Christian religion and has no supreme being, it does have some overlap with Catholicism. One is Oshun and the Virgen de la Caridad who both are celebrated on September 8th, frequently simultaneously in the same church. This photo was that day at the Catholic church Nuestra Senora de la Caridad in Havana where Santerias also worship.

Maybe a humorous misspelling of "France" reflecting the French pronunciation... :)
