Farewell Bend....
Farewell Bend....
A park in Bend Oregon. Bend straddles a river that runs through it and grew up on the lumber industry. Logs were cut in the woods of Oregon and floated down the river to be milled in Bend and shipped East in the 1800's and early 1900's. The town was originally known as "Farewell Bend" as the town centered around a large bend where the mill district developed.
The mill district centered at the "bend" of the river that you can see in the distance. The "Old Mill" district is now a very upscale shopping mall of that name..."Old Mill". Across the river from the shopping center is the "Les Scwab" outdoor amphitheatre which presents many music concerts each week throughout the summer. A large Hot Air balloon show also takes place in mid summer from the amphiteatre.
Now, the river provides recreation and parks throughout the community of Bend. No logs have been floated down the river for many years for milling. However, the river is littered with waterlogged submerged logs and has been for many years, creating water hazards. The Deschutes river is also popular along it's length from Central Oregon to the Columbia River. Recreation includes Kayaking, White Water rafting, Fly Fishing, Steelhead and Salmon fishing from jet boats on the lower half. German Browns and Rainbows of record lengths are still pulled from the river. National Class skiing is about 20 minutes away at Mt Bachelor.
Great living here. Bring money or your own job however. The area is affectionately known as "Poverty with a View". And, for many years prior to the "bubbleburst".
Here is my yellow contribution. Kayaking is a primary recreation, along with hiking, mountain biking, fishing............and the list goes on.
Taken with my two day old Canon 5D... two images, largely no PP except for panoramic stitching in PSE
