your 35/50 preferences

I use a 35 and a 28 on my M9 but will occasionally use the 50. Wider and longer than that just doesn't seem to work for me. I have a CV28/2 and 35/1.7 and a Summicron 50. One fine day they will get replaced with Leica fast glass.

35mm Summilux + Noctilux.

This has changed a bit in the last 4 years .... I enjoy using my 35/2.8 Summaron (M3 version) a lot lately and also a Summar 5cm 1:2 LTM lens. Still have the 35 Summilux and Noctilux lenses but they see less use than previously ...

I owned Pre-Aspheric Summilux in 35 and 50mm
I disliked the images of the 35mm, that i sold.
The 50mm was not needed.
I find enough light always, hating limited depth of field shots..😀
A Canon 50mm f 1.2 went for similar reasons.

New Leica lenses will never happen.

I find a fast 35 really handy.

I'm usually found with a ZM 35/2 and a ZM 50/2 which make a very nice pair.

However, the CV 35/1.4 MC Nokton with a 50/2.5 Summarit makes for a nice compact kit with extra speed available on the lens where I'm likely to want it.

I think it depends on what you shoot in a specific period in your career. I dreamt about 50mm for many years and then got over it pretty quickly. I love the ability to go wider with 35mm and so I'm looking for a cron for my new Leica M6.

After 4 years of just using an M3 and a fast 50, I am going back to an M3/50 F2 and a M6/35 F1.4.

I love the M3/50 combo but I am *really* missing my old workhorse set of a M6TTL and 35mm 1.4 Lux Asph.

I've got a Nikon 35 1.8 in Nikon S mount for my rangefinders, and a Nikkor 35 1.4 AIS for my SLR kit, and use them both for street shooting.
I also have a Nikon 50 1.4 in Nikon S mount (one of those so-called Millenium lenses, which came with my re-issued S3), as well as a Nikkor 50 1.4 AI SLR lens, and these two each have an honoured position in the bottom of an equipment drawer. They're too long to be wide, and too wide to be long, and are a focal length I stopped using 30 years ago after I was introduced to the 35.

I used to think about the relevance of fast lenses, but I found myself rarely using the full apertures on the fast pace street shooting. Unless it was something posed where you have the time to focus accurately the f/2-1.5 were rarely used. So I opted for compactness and wide angles in detriment of bulk and speed. (I have a VC 21mm in the horizon)

I have been all over and my vote today is different. I have settled on f2.0 as standard for both lengths. I did, however, retain my Amedeo-Contax 50/1.5 because it so beautiful and renders the same.

35mm lens perspective reminds me of the of cheap PS camera boom of 90s when most of the kodak PS cameras had 35mm lenses as a standard. Dark times in photo history 😉) heheh

35mm Summicron + 50mm Elmar-M.

I use the 'Cron most of the time, with the Elmar-M coming out when I need a little more reach. The latter is small, light, and draws beautifully (a perfect second lens!).

I shoot with the Nokton 50 1.5 but I can't help feeling that the 35mm focal length would be a better match for my M6. I'm really tempted to pick up a Summicron.

Well since 2011 my last post in this thread things have changed...
Now its a 35 summilux, 50 2.5 summarit, and still a 50 summicron v3

Hi Helen,

Why do you need two 50mm lenses?
I myself cannot justify to have 2 lenses with same focal length.
In the past, I sold 35/2 v2 and keep the v4. 50/2 v4 is not with me anymore since I purchase 50/2 the rigid.
