your favorite 50mm lens for m

I like Summicrons after Rigid for color (only) on film and Jupiter-3 for BW DR prints (not large).
If for larger BW DR prints then Cron Collapsible.

I know this won't be a popular answer, but I am a long time fan of Elmar-M 50/2.8 (modern version from the 90s). Classic look with modern coating. Very light and packs small. Extremely flare/ghost resistant. And ultimately, I just like the look of the image this lens renders.

It is a great little lens. Sold it long ago.🙁

Use a VC 50/2.5 lens now. And it is almost as good but faster to put into use since it is not collapsible.

I really love the 50mm Summilux E46 pre-asph. It's super sharp, but dreamy at the same time. However, I probably use my 50mm Summicron ver.5 more than the Summilux and really really love the Summicron as a daily lens.

The slow ones: Color Skopar 50mm f/2.5; S Skopar 50mm f/2.5; collapsible Summicron 50mm; rigid Summicron 50mm.

The fast ones: Nokton 50mm f/1.1; Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v1 black; All Black Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4.

It is difficult for me to choose one favorite 50mm lens for the M.
I like the Rigid Summicron and the DR. The original Zeiss 5cm/1.5 and 5cm/2 are wonderful lenses. A new favorite is a Pentax-M 50/1.4 modified to M. It is a great little lens. The Zeiss G 45/2 (not exactly 50) modified to M is a great lens too. The J-3 50/1.5 is sometimes in need for shimming, but once they get shimmed well, they become very nice lenses. The Hexanon 50/2.4 is a very sharp lens, as Roland has shown us here. The Nikon 50/2 is an excellent lens. So is the Canon 50/1.4. I nearly forgot about the Elmar 50/2.8!

I have many favorite 50mm lenses.

My two favorite 50mm lenses are different from most.

I absolutely love the Nikkor SC 50mm 1.4. It's a fast lens and I love the rendering. Have only used it for black and white film.

A close second is the Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm 1.5 that Brian Sweeney made.

Both are perfect on my M3 and on my M9,

Wait! What are we doing here? Are we looking for our first lens? Adding to a collection of 50mm lenses? Are we being practical about it, or are we trying to find something to GAS over even though we don't really need more lenses? Do we want to buy one lens or two (or zero)? Are we interested in learning if or why people prefer different lenses for different film types?
