your favorite 50mm lens for m

Summicron V5

Also have & use
Zeiss Sonnar
Voigtlander Nokton 1.1 & 1.5
Canon LTM 50/1.5
Fed LTM !

I've owned so many other 50's in the past I can't remember. I did get rid of the a Rigid Summicron because I like the V5 much more. far better lens for what I do.

Topcor 5cm/f2 LTM is excellent and my favourite older lens ( used Nikkor SC5cm/1.4, Nicca 50/2.8 , Super Rokkor 45/2.8)

My only newer lens is a Zeiss ZM Planar 50/2 which is perfect as far as I’m concerned

The ZM C Sonnar is a wonder. Beautiful Zeiss colours. Superb at f2 and 2.8. Wicked at 1.5, and a lot easier when not too close in. Even f5.6 is beautiful with this lens. My go to is the tabbed version 4 Summicron, light and great ergonomics. Also like the Elmar M 2.8. And the DR Summicron renders the red of my roses better than any other lens I've tried, even on digital (M9).

I've not shot any colour with the Sonnar, and I felt the DR pipped it to the post on black and white having just a bit less contrast. I've a colour roll loaded in my M3 which I have just shot some colour for the first time with the DR and I'll have a walk out today and try the two.

What is obvious from this thread is how many wonderful 50mm choices there are for M mount cameras!

The one lens I do not recommend is the Leica 50 0.95.
I tried it and it is just a one trick pony - shooting relatively close up at .95. The rest of the time it just ruins the M experience of having compact lenses. This thing is huge, heavy, unbalanced and blocks most of the VF.
There, I just saved you $12,000.

I've never really settled on one, but the collapsible Summicron will be the one I'll use the most for the next year. Have a DR too, and an original Nokton.

Thank You Helen. They are all good. Long ago a member (Paulfish) compared 50mm lens's with 150 horsepower boat motors. It was the standard size so every manufacturer made sure to build a good one. Miss you Paulfish. Joe

PS I really do like the Nikkor 50mm f2.0 on my Leica IIIc.

I've only owned four 50mm lenses for my M6 and M6ttl. In order of purchase:

1990-s Leica 50/2 summicron, bought with the first M6
50/1.5 CV LTM
50/1.5 CV M-mount
(The cron and LTM Nokton were sold to get...)
50/2.8 Elmar-M ("current" version)

My order of preference is:
50/1.5 M
50/2.8 Elmar-M
50/1.5 LTM (it loses to the Elmar for the 1m close focus)
50/2 Leica (it was fine optically, just mechanically troubled)

I have or have used most Leica 50's made during the 20th century. They have all been stellar, but some shine in certain applications.

The best all-rounder for me was the 1980's rigid Summicron, which I go back to over and over. But honestly, there hasn't been a bad 'un among them.

Great shot, Huss! Wonderful.

Erik.
