V5 - I hate the little size of the V6 hood. The larger detachable hood of the V5 is much better. Same optics thought.
2nd choice is the DR

I have owned and used almost all versions of the Leica M mount 50mm Summicron lens. The DR is my favorite. But, the current Summicron is also very very good, especially with color film. Well, with B&W film too, it is a very sharp and contrasty lens. Very different from the DR, but still nice.

I've had the collapsible (beatiful mechanical lens with surprising center sharpness for a 50 years old lens wide open). I used to the V3 with no tab wich was a very nice handling lens, light and big focusing ring.. But now have the chrome V5 lens wich is nice and heavy brass not to everyone liking reading everyone advising for the lighter black aluminium model. Still a beautiful lens, easy to work with and with the fast handling tab.

V3 without tab:

and the rare V5 in chrome with tabbed:

And the best cron of all is the one you use the most!!!!!!

I voted DR - it's my only 50 cron. Prompts a corollary question to the poll: How many 50 crons have you/ do you own? or have you seriously tried?

Collapsible is my favorite, I've owned the rigid I think it is, it can have the eyes attached. It was too bulky for me, the collapsible is perfect to fit in my pocket

I have a Rigid that is factory fresh. Got in 1980 and used it but once or twice. I think it is worth a small fortune. My DR is the same.
The one I use is the 1969 as it has nice properties without going overboard.
What I would really like to have is a first `Lux from 1959. It is lots like my summarit which is a very nice lens if you can find a good one.

Ronald,
Once a lens is used, it is a used lens. If the rigid Summicron is LTM, then it can sell for $1500 and up,but an M mount Summicron that is in like new condition will not sell for such amounts.

I use the below one (with build in hood) _is that V5 or V6? It is my most sharp and contrasty lens directly followed by the Industar L/D 61.

I only have the collapsible, so I guess that's it....? Wouldn't mind a dual range, but I've shot my budget for a while.

How can I distinguish the rigid from the dual range?
Thank you!

The DR Summicron has a flat section on the top of the lens barrel where the goggles fit. Impossible to miss. see here: http://www.cameraquest.com/m50dr.htm

My best leica lens is still rigid.. I do not find any better than that... I switch once and I have buy it again.. I guess that choosing the lens is very personal....

I have seven 50mm Leica lenses. From the LTM 3.5 Elmar to the Summilux. In terms of resolution and contrast the newest 50 Summicron and 50 ASPH Summilux wins hands down. I think my favorite for B&W though is the 50 DR Summicron followed by the first (2nd?) version Summilux. I've tried doing lens tests but it just not meaningful. While not a big subscriber to "bokeh" some lenses just look better with some films and some subjects. If I did more color / slides I'd go with the newest lenses but since I shoot mostly B&W I like the older ones.

Is there a web-based timeline somewhere that shows the progression of the Summicron 50/2??
I've been shopping on Ebay for one, and it's tough to know exactly what I'm looking at. BTW - the Canadian made versions go for much less than the German equivalents, are there any performance advantages to going with the German versions, or is it just a preference thing??
