I came back to where my wife and I were staying on Black Walnut Point, which sticks out into the Chesapeake Bay, and spotted this cloud. I already had an orange filter on the lens.

Happy moment for mom
Not so very artistic, but it reminds me to be more observant of the contents of the frame, as I had not noticed my dropped hearing aid when I shot the photo. Further it reminds me that life is tough and persistent... might we find on Mars something equivalent to a bee on a flower?

I had good light, a pretty girlfriend, and it was the first time I had ever shot T-Max (always shot Tri-X until then). Nikon N8008s w/ a Makinon 135 2.8 lens.

Yeah sure, I'll play.
Favourite for now (haven't done any b&w prints yet for this year) I guess. I think it's a good (or at least okay plus) picture from what was a pretty good bad time (super hot day + lack of sleep because of course the race car needed to be fixed the day before).
Somewhat relevant is that I shot this with the voigtländer 21/1,8 which I had bought like a week before this photo was taken. So far I really dig it - super good angle of view for the sort of stuff I do, and fast enough. Looking forward to more of this in the future and hey maybe I'll even buy a finder for it in 2019.

Manly ferry crossing Sydney heads. The Manly ferries dog-leg across Sydney heads in rough seas to avoid broadsiding the incoming swells. The change of direction can be quite exciting, depending on how well or otherwise the skipper times the turn with the swells. The ferries are double deck and double-ended for quick turnaround times at the wharf; journey time is 35mins. In rough weather such as this passengers are discouraged from the outer decks due to risk of a drenching. In heavy seas all outside decks are closed and passengers are warned to stay seated.
I think this one's my favourite for 2018 because it has drama and excitement, as well as being a subject I love to photograph. Looking at this picture reminds me of the feeling of a rough crossing. Also, I took it with a Barnack, kind of fitting since the Manly ferries have been around since the 1850s, when they were steamships. I've been riding these ferries, including steam ones, since I was a child.

I chose this one because it's a street shot done in "Illustration" mode in-camera (Sony a6000).
On the streets of Los Angeles I'm walking around and come across two guys delivering several racks of the exact same dress...all the same design and the same color...I stopped, looked then shot one frame...the guys watched, wondering why...I walked away never saying a single word...

This is my favourite print from 2018. Clouds clearing after the storm in Villnoss Tal, Trentino/ Sud Tirol Italy. We magically had the perfect Air BnB, had just come back from a rainy hike and the clouds began to clear. I shot 6 rolls of 120 in a tripod-mounted Fuji GW680 iii in 30 minutes before the light changed. Right from our balcony. This one was on Acros. The famous church of St Johann of Ranui is in the open meadow at the bottom centre of the photo.

If I had to explain it to someone I might ramble on about the graphic nature of the foreground, the individuals, and the fog...
The photo was taken on a one week photo shoot in Niigata and the day after we received 80cm of snow... beautiful winter destination.

As to why it's my favourite is difficult. As Peter said so eloquently, my choice could change with mood, or simply that I skip a better image due to it being hidden deeper in the archives. But for the now and why, I like the bond between parent and child captured in silhouette, and the play of light interacting with the emulsion in my camera.

I am going to cheat and suggest alternatives.
If limited to an image I shot this year, possibly this one (though it is hard to pick - my "favorite" varies from day to day, as my mood changes). I would choose it because the young woman looks so engaged in her own world and captures what I often aim for but seldom achieve in image making.

But if I can pick an image that was taken a few years ago but left unnoticed on my hard drive until a couple of months ago when I post processed it to produce the final image I would say this one on the grounds that it was "made" this year. I like it because it captures a sense of vulnerability (real or imagined) of the subject. It is not perfect technically but this adds to it somehow and I like the story it tells.

Rollei 35, Tessar, Agfapan 100APX in Rodinal 1:100. Pictures like this show up seldom in my work and they remind me, that there is always something fresh to see, even when the equipment is standardized as much as possible (and sometimes I feel as if I begin to master this equipment;-)

Difficult to select "the favorite" ! But a good exercise, thanks Lynn for the proposal!
This is what I picked up, for sure not the best but my favorite, yes.
Why my favorite? Many reasons I'll summarize here in random order.
It was shot in y studio and there my wife, always supportive with my passions
On the background there is the old cupboard which has been inherited by my father's family, the only thing which survived WWII.
There is in foreground my drawing table and on the left my editing working computer table.
On the drawing table is my M10 with the new 28/5.6 Summaron lens on it.
On the wall you can see a drawing from my father with the "Amerigo Vespucci" the main sailing school ship of the italian Navy.
On the side there is a collage made by my mother about 35 years ago.
There is even one of my Impossible cameras !
It is not a great photo but there is so much of me and my passions here.

Such a good question, Lynn, and I'll go with a photo of the lady I've been lucky enough to share the year with. We went on quite a few trips but our favourite was a couple of weeks in Jamaica, where this was taken. We'd heard so many negative things about it, how it's dangerous, the people are pushy and so on but we went ahead and hired a car and drove around. Well, no problems at all, even in Kingston, and most of the people we met were friendly and laid back, in fact just the opposite to what we expected. So this photo reminds me of good times in a wonderful place.
