Your thoughts on Nikkor 50/1.8 AI-S Japanese pancake version

Super Dourbalister! There's a real 3D quality to these images too.

Thank you, Charles! Have you gotten a chance to use your lens yet? ;)

@ dourbalistar: I'm convinced the AI Nikkor 50mm f/1.8S is an good, I can even say excellent lens.

But when I look at all these pictures I think...it is the photographer not the tool!

Congrats, you have a great eye and good technical abilities ! Bravo!

Thank you very much, Robert, I appreciate your kind words!

Excellent looking images are posted here. The M5 looks very cool too.

Thank you, Raid! The M5 is my first M camera, and I still love using it. Just loaded up another roll in it tonight! :D

Picked it up yesterday (only 5 months to clean it!), and still have a roll in the M5 (such a great camera - mine has the same covering flaking issue as yours - in the same place!), so when that's done with, out I'll go with the pancake.

I very much enjoy your photos, Mr. D, including family and Yosemite pics. This thread inspired me to take a closer look at my Nikkor 50/1.8. It’s got the rabbit ears and .45m MFD, but I don’t think it’s a pancake. From the serial no. (187****) it appears to be an early-ish sample from the late 70s, when Nikon introduced the 50/1.8 to replace the 50/2.0. (For a pancake lens for my Nikon SLRs, I went the CV Ultron 40/2.0 route). But the early Nikkor 50/1.8 AI is a sweet lens nevertheless. Here’s a pic from last February, just before lockdown...

Thank you, Steve! Nikon made many different versions of the 50/1.8, including three different "pancake" versions. I believe you're correct that your copy dates from the late 70s, with the rabbit ears and AI (no -s) coupling. MIR has some more details about the first version on their website.

The first version came on the market in January 1978, quickly followed by the redesigned version in 1980 (this version has its minimum f/stop down to f/22).... The early version may has a startup numbering from 1760801; version two: 2050001 onwards.

As for the 50/1.8 pancake versions, the first one was the Series E in 1978, followed by the Mark II (Japanese domestic market version, the subject of this thread) in 1980, and then a Mark III in 1985:
