Your travel setup, your input?

My last trip to DC (as a complete tourist):
M9, 21, 35, 50.
I would have taken a 90 but forced myself to only 3 lenses.
Worked out fine without the 90. In fact, I don't think I saw many occasions where I missed it, and I really try not to be changing lenses all the time.

A 75 might be different. Don't have one, but I'm waaaayy curious. I might find it more exciting and useful than a 90. Everyone is different when it comes to "tele"

Glad it went well. Leicas were the right choice. Surprised the 75 never made an appearance.... However, I remember using 21 and 35 a lot while there...

Hope you stopped into the DC Leica Store while there. I know they're all salespeople in there, but its fun when they ask what's in your bag. Then show you the latest 21mm lens... Sure, if I had an extra $4500 in my pocket, I'd be very interested 🙂

If I am gonna "travel" I carry everything I have. If Im taking a walk in the neighborhood or riding downtown or something it is one block one lens. Some situations two blocks and two lenses... Df F2 and a set of factory converted primes is my kit.

But then again I always have a camera close by so whatever. 🙂

@kknox - glad the trip went well. There's something to be said for keeping things as minimal as you can.

@narsuitus - interesting that you travel camera is the Canon G11/15. I went through a string of Canons including the S45, S70, G7, G10 and S90 before settling on the Ricoh GRD III and Sigma DP1 to handle a lot of my travel needs. I picked up the G10 again a few days ago, and I'd forgotten how nice it feels. Been giving some thought to the new Canon G1X III, with its aps-c sensor and 24-70 lens as an amalgamation of Canon handling with DSLR image quality.

Generally though, I travel overseas with the M9 + 21/35/50 and a m43 camera and a compact like the Panasonic LX7. This combination handles good quality images, snapshots, and video.

If I wasn't so concerned with video, I'd leave the m43 camera at home and just use the LX7 for snapshots and video, and the M9 with 28/50 to keep weight down. I like the 28 Elmarit and 50 Summicron in this situation.

I never take videos. My travel kit changes a little each trip, but I like the M9 + M 4/3 combo for flexibility and compactness.

It's been a couple of years, and my travel kit has changed a bit. The Leica kit would the the M9 with Zeiss 21/2.8, Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4, and Summicron 50 v5. Panasonic G9 with 12-35/2.8 and Olympus 25/1.2 Pro. Sony RX0 as pocket cam. That's my total kit for overseas travel, and work travel, too.

For future travel, I might take the Panasonic S5 with Lumix 50/1.8, 20-60, and maybe a Minolta prime or two like the MD W Rokkor 24/2.8 and the MD Rokkor 35/2.8 v3. The autofocus of the 50 is snappy and accurate on the S5 in most situations. Sony RX0 pocket cam. I feel that the S5 effectively replaces the M9 and G9 for travel, but I'd have to go out with it to know for sure.

I would suggest taking the M262 and the three lenses you mentioned. I would slip the M2 in the bag in case you see some shots you want to get on film. I'd leave the Fuji behind to hold down the amount of stuff. When Sue and I went to DC I took my M8.2 that I had at the time with a 21/2.8; a 28/2; 35/1.4; and 50/2, plus a film M body and the little Leicasonic D-Lux 4. It all fit nicely in my Domke F6, which makes a nice "home away from home" for that outfit. Another favorite "home away from home" is my Think Tank Retrospective 5, good for one Leica body and three lenses.

Just back from a long weekend trip to Florida. I took a IIIf, the 35/2.5 Nikkor and two FILCA cassettes* loaded with Foma 200. I used a light meter app in the iPhone to calibrate my eye for the light when I got there (one stop brighter than New Jersey) and Sunny 16 for rest of the time.

* I don't actually carry the film on the plane. I mail the cassettes from home to myself at our destination before I leave and then mail them back to myself at home when I am ready to return.

For a regular travel trip with my wife... i..e. not a photography trip... I am only going to bring my new Ricoh GRIIIx. That's it. If I'm traveling alone and think I'll do some more important photography, then maybe still the GRIIIx. I am a fan of 40-75mm lenses typically so I see no sense in taking anything else since it has a 40mm. Now, when I'm local...that's when I use more equipment.

Travelling with film these days is suicidal - those airport X-ray machines can fry eggs at fifty paces, never mind what they do to our precious emulsions.

This said, when I go forth to photograph yet more old architecture in southeast Asia in a few months' time, I will be taking along -

A Rolleicord Vb kit with 20 rolls of 120, the film in a 1970s metal K-ration can, OR

A Nikkormat FT2 with a 28mm lens and 35mm film in the same can, OR

A Nikon D700/D800 with one lens, most likely my favorite (and well used) 28/2.8 D.

Oh. Also a few clothes, some personal grooming items, my laptop, phone, chargers.

Everything else I can buy along the way. Even film - in Singapore. Expensive as anything, but it's there and it's available. So things out there in the big bad real world aren't as bad as they at times seem...

I do envy the gentleman who posted #49. If I could only afford that rig, it's surely the way to go!!

My travel set-up has been the same for a while.
Fujifilm X100V and FX10. The X100V is the workhorse and the FX10 covers the wider angle needs and its macro capability comes in handy too. Also, the XF10 is a camera that I can toss to my wife and say “take a picture of me taking a picture of whatever”. All our travel is domestic and transportation is always trains, buses, a lot of walking and the occasional air flight.

Does an X100F + WCL and TCL make sense for travel?

A simple short trip would call for an M8 or M9. A longer trip either or both plus an M240. 28, 35, 40, 50 and 85mm lenses. If I really want to go nuts I'd take along the A73 with the Zeiss/Sony 55mm f/1.8 and the Sony 24 - 240. The car does all the heavy lifting. And it has a compartment under the rear deck that is quite concealed for not in use cameras to hide in. None of this guarantees good photos in any way. But I can never say I did not have the gear.

Does an X100F + WCL and TCL make sense for travel?

Well, if you like 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm... it could. However, if you change focal lengths often, it gets annoying since these are screw on adaptors. If you are a jpeg user, Fuji has a digital zoom option that does not lose MPs.

I've decided I need something like this. I never got a Billingham, although they're very nice, but always used Domkes or similar which are still clearly camera bags that likely contain a nice camera. I'm not going out on a fashion runway, I'm going out to get photographs 😉
