Hi,

I am shooting with A Bessa R2C and a CZ Sonnar 50/1.5. In order to test the difference with a lens hood, I would like to buy a rectangular style metal hood. I’ve a very nice one from Zeiss, which unfortunately requires lenses with a special mount. I saw that the modern Voigtlaender and Zeiss Ikon lenses have a mount like this, and my question is if anybody has seen adapter rings for these hood mounts which I might screw into my Sonnar 39mm lens?
Thanks in advance,
Christian

Welcome Christian.

I believe the classic 50/1.5 has 40.5mm filter size.

Here are some hood options (no connections to the sellers, etc.): 320136631877 (round, straight), 190132152056 (round, but slanted).
Ritzcam.com has the following:

I have never seen a rectangular Zeiss one. I don't believe Voigtlander hoods
will fit.

Also hoods for Jupiter 3 and 8 lenses will fit. I believe some of those
are rectangular.

Best,

Roland.

Hi Roland,

Thanks for the answer!!!
You are right. the Voigtlaenders won't fir, as they have this bajonett-type hood mount. Do you have any information if there are adapter rings to screw in in order to change to the bajonett mount?

Thanks again,
Christian

I don't believe there are adapters, Christian, these bayonett hoods are
vendor specific. If I were you, I would get something like 190132152056.

BTW, on my Canon 50/1.5, which has 40mm filter, I use a hand-modified
Leitz 12585 push on hood; I had to sand it a little from the inside but
now it fits, also my Jupiter-3 lens with 40.5mm filter size.

Best,

Roland.

Alternate hoods

Alternate hoods

If the filter size for the lens is 40.5 and you want a rectangle hood look at the Hama hoods at B&H. You may not find the exact filter size but a step up ring might work.

Another alternative I use for my Olympus OM gear is the Pentax metal rectangular lens hoods. They can be found for the standard and medium wide angle lenses and are 49mm filter sizes. The wide angle for their 28mm f3.5 have a slip-and-grip type of mount while their 35mm f2.8 is a screw-on mount. You will need a step up ring for these as well to work on the 40.5mm thread.

Can find these on the leading auction sites for anywhere from $10 to $30. I even use one on my Canon QIII-17 (which can be seen here and is for sale: http://www.2tcreative.com/new_site/4sale/om.html#qiii )

The Zeiss hood that you have may be for the Contarex SLR- some of the hoods for that system were rectangular.

As for hood options, the prior posts have good suggestions. Also, ebay sellers heavystar and american eagle offer good quality hoods for 20 to 25 USD.

Here is an answer and a non-answer:

There is a Russian hard rubber lens hood for lenses with a 40.5 mm thread mount. It's a slip-on hood, but it holds well. Mine has the price molded in: 25 kopecks. There's a command economy in action!

But you can't use it on a Contax mount lens which rotates as you focus. Much of the time it will vignette. There are some cool 40.5mm scre-on shades with vents and slanted sides that only cost about $12 on eBay. I'd get one of those.
