ZI reliability

ZI reliability

People seem to equate weight of a camera with its build quality.
This logic reminds me of the logic prevalent in high-end audio
that thicker cables always sound better.
Some seem to be concerned with the ZI reliability.
What is the alternative? My perception is that those who encountered
reliability issues with the ZI think that Leica is the right way to go although it is more expensive. I heard of enough problems with Leica's that I am not convinced that they are any better.

The only issue I had with my Icon is a mis-aligned range finder.
It has been fixed and the camera works perfectly now and I am quite happy with it.
I suppose, a jammed shutter or another issue can be fixed and the camera will work fine after that.
I have experienced a camera breakdown in the middle of trips and it is quite annoying.
However, a rational thought suggests that nothing is perfect and such thing can happen.
So, on important trips I carry a spare camera.
If problems persist than they are real problems. One time occurrences are not sufficient for me to complain about camera's reliability. I have used my ZI long enough to say that for me
it is a better photographic tool than an M6, for example. I also have to say that I have not used
the camera long enough to comment on its long term reliability. I can only say that so far it has been reliable enough and I expect it to remain like that.

Zoran

I have come to the conclusion that the Zeiss Ikon is a fairly reliable and well functioning camera. - Only the thought that it should be smarter to buy a 2.hand Leica for the same money is rediculous. With the support-organisation that Carl Zeiss is building up, and the generosity they have shown customers who do have had problems, to buy a ZI is a pritty safe thing.

What all should ask themselves is if it is smart to spend that kind of money on an old fashioned analogue camera when the photographical world is racing towards a digital future? When you can get an excellent digital camera for half the cost.

If Carl Zeiss means it serious that 'they are back with passion' they should sooner rather than later come to the market place with a digital Zeiss Ikon.

I have now had an Ikon (limited) since early Dec 2005. So far it has been used weekly witha variety of CV and ZM lenses with no problems. Admitedly it sts inside a R2 bottom case and is used as and when i feel like given that it has to live with a Pentax istD, a rollei sl2000, Mamiya 645 and 330 as well as a V R2 and L.

But I have absoloutly no problems with it at all.

And it is still running on the original cells it came with

Nice job by Zeiss & Rich Schleuning. He sent me a ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar to test for a few weeks when I expressed an interest in one but with some uncertainty about its performance characteristics (i.e. after discussions here). And at no cost to me! He's a heckuva guy.

If Rich Schleuning is any indication, Zeiss is very serious about providing excellent customer support.

Hmmm - maybe I should write him too, so I can get a Sonnar to test drive. I wonder if this sort of a deal open to everyone though? And while at it I'd love to test drive 25mm Biogon . Wonder if he'll send ME those lenses that easily. Whats his email?
