Sorry, I don´t agree. M4-2/M4-P bodies are more prone to this. This problem has been well-documented. Leica has gone so far as to create a special cleaning solution to temporarily get rid of the problem - ask Sherry. The only permanent solution is to replace the rangefinder. All the bodies that I have seen at dealers had to be previously cleaned by a repairman.
That is the first time I hear about this !
Could you provide some more informations / links about this topic ? Also you write "the only permanent solution is to replace the rangefinder", what is different with the rangefinder of a M4-2/M4-P compared to later ones (M6 for example) except the LEDs for the metering ?

The problem was glue outgassing
- not the lubricants.
Just send it in for a CLA every seven years
.
No flame wars please:angel:.

... glue outgassing !? That sounds indeed bad...

Don´t worry, of all the Leicas that I´ve owned, over the years, the M4-p has been the most trouble free
. However, It´s a good idea to have an occasional CLA - the plastic flash block can crack, and eventually jam the shutter.

My M5s need red dots!
Well... this camera will get a CLA despite the fact that the seller said it was CLAd last year.
And the VF is pristine!

Congrats! Maybe your "new" M4-2 can meet my "new" M4-P at a Chicago get together; if I ever get the time to actually get away.....
My M4-P came with a VERY clear VF, so it must have been cleaned sometime, if there's an out-gas problem.
