AFAIK, he's not dead. There was just a big brouhaha that led up to him leaving. As usual nobody really knows what happened behind the scenes.

Pixtu was a favorite of mine here. I liked the humour in all those self-portraits. I appreciated all his work on the Monday favorites thread, his excellent photography, and the fact that he helped encourage discussion of photography around here rather than just talk of equipment. Pixtu, if you read this, know you are missed!

Said to hear he's gone from here. He added a lot of great ideas and found edges where some did not want to tread. When I started to read this thread I too was quite sad. Way too much bad things happening in the world today.
Folks come and go. Some people step up to fill voids in new ways, other times there is a whole in the community. I do hope he comes back, I like him a lot.
