OK. This time I am really going to do it. Just one camera and one lens for a weekend in NYC. I will be with my son, who needs a fair bit of minding, so slogging anything heavier than one camera with one lens is right out. The winner: M8 and 35/2 Summicron v.4.

Have fun, there are tons of pictures to be shot at every corner, you won't know where to focus first. Most important, don't forget your long johns, wind in the streets of NYC and it feels like being in a freezer. Stay warm and enjoy. Let's see some pic's once you're back.

The other lens I love for city-scapes is the CV 15/4.5 -- it gets a lot more use in NY than it does in Vermont. Now, I have told myself to be disciplined on lens choice. But the 15 is so small . . . NO! I must be resolute. Anyone else have this problem of gear-creep when planning a trip?

If taking a second lens, and I think a wide angle like that would be good in NYC, use a camera as a rear lens cap for it, then you won't have to switch lenses! :)

As a bonus, you'll have a backup in case your one camera fails.

You see. This is how it starts. Then you find yourself standing slack-jawed in front of your photo cabinet and wake to find yourself down the road with 15 lbs of photo gear. ;-)

Ben is right: when you start thinking about the possibilities, they win and you lose.

I went to NY for the first time in my life with a Canonet (which has a 40mm f1.7 fixed lens) and enjoyed it thouroughly. If I were to return, I'd take my M4-2 with Hexanon 35mm or one of my M6TTLs with my 'lux 35.

Have fun and post some results upon your return!

I might also bring a 15/4.5, but if you can only bring the 'cron, you simply need to move your feet. the 15 is great fun in nyc. I shoot from the hip with mine on the street. it sure does distort the hell out of perspective and angles in those skyscraper canyons.
