Leica has stopped making film cameras already in 2009 ?

I just wonder why they announced it this way but it would make sense, Japan seems to be the largest market for Leica film cameras.

And that doesn't mean they stopped analog production, although someday that time may come. They can just limit the batches.

I bought one new M body and it was bittersweet. In 2000 I got one of the last M6 .85 non ttl bodies. A new Leica but a finder so full of flare that it was about worthless. Finally, several years ago I had Sherry K. upgrade the finder and now it's a great camera. Leica, for the money, please get it right the first time. Joe

I supect that there is a little 'lost in translation' happening here also. Kaufmman may possibly have been merely stating that there is nothing coming after the current generation film cameras (MP and M7) ... they are the end of the line and no further development will be made in the analog area!

I would expect them to keep making them in small runs occasionally and charging the bloody earth for them ... didn't they make a new batch of twenty M2's or M4's or something similar a while ago for a special project?

if this where true (stopping production of film cameras, save for a-la-carte) i would look to start saving $$$ and order an a-la-carte MP, if it would be my only chance to own a new Leica. and it would be a once in a lifetime thing, esp. given the price.

Leica were still assembling M7s and MPs when i went to their factory last year. They have gone out of their way to say that they still make the MP and M7; see linked video at:

They are just amking only a few and at the moment all they are making in M9s. This makes sense, because they can sell as many of them as they make, while they only sell 100-150 MPs and M7s a month.
