I just wonder why they announced it this way but it would make sense, Japan seems to be the largest market for Leica film cameras.

The best camera is one that still works!
Hmmm ... is Nikon still making the F6? From what Jon mentioned in a thread a while ago they were still making a limted number per year ... if so who would have guessed they'd outlast Leica!
What are Cosina and Zeiss now thinking about ... a digital rangefinder maybe I hope?

If you order an A La Carte M7/MP, I doubt they'll say no.

There is no back-log for MP/M7 (meaning there is stock). There is significant back-log for the M9 and some lenses. With limited manufacturing resources, it's the right business move to concentrate on M9 and lens manufacturing. Why the surprise ?
Kaufmann didn't say Leica stopped building film cameras forever.

On Leica's facebook site someone from Leica replied to the question raised that M7's and MP's are still under production.

And that doesn't mean they stopped analog production, although someday that time may come. They can just limit the batches.

The facebook site response from Leica was (via google translate):
"Hello, we still build the M7 and MP."

Hi, i hoped to see an M body with all m9 shutter and advance capabilities.
But are they selling 2009 stocks only?
Does anyone knows the demand curve of film leicas of the past 10 years?
Bye!

I bought one new M body and it was bittersweet. In 2000 I got one of the last M6 .85 non ttl bodies. A new Leica but a finder so full of flare that it was about worthless. Finally, several years ago I had Sherry K. upgrade the finder and now it's a great camera. Leica, for the money, please get it right the first time. Joe

So, how am I supposed to order my a-la-carte leica MP? I work and live in a country where this is not possible. Any advice on where to order the a la carte mp and have it shipped to me is much appreciated. p

me thinks they drop M7 first, and keep MP's avail for film nostalgists for as long as its profitable.
The MP is too beautiful to discontinue.

There is the unlikely scenario for a successor to the M7. M7.2? MP-2 with AE?

I supect that there is a little 'lost in translation' happening here also. Kaufmman may possibly have been merely stating that there is nothing coming after the current generation film cameras (MP and M7) ... they are the end of the line and no further development will be made in the analog area!
I would expect them to keep making them in small runs occasionally and charging the bloody earth for them ... didn't they make a new batch of twenty M2's or M4's or something similar a while ago for a special project?

They made a batch of 20 M4-P / M4-2 cameras out of spare sparts, which were donated.

if this where true (stopping production of film cameras, save for a-la-carte) i would look to start saving $$$ and order an a-la-carte MP, if it would be my only chance to own a new Leica. and it would be a once in a lifetime thing, esp. given the price.

Leica were still assembling M7s and MPs when i went to their factory last year. They have gone out of their way to say that they still make the MP and M7; see linked video at:
http://theonlinephotographer.typepa.../2009/05/does-leica-still-make-mp-and-m7.html
They are just amking only a few and at the moment all they are making in M9s. This makes sense, because they can sell as many of them as they make, while they only sell 100-150 MPs and M7s a month.

I took some photos of the Asahi Camera article that I will upload during lunch in an hour or so. The title page of the article says for both M7 and MP -> 生産終了 "seisan shuuryou" which translates as "discontinued".

... no, no Jon. 生産終了 means "only temporarily halted, will be assembled from parts according to demand" ...
