American Road Trip 1979 on Kodachrome

USA08-09 Grand Canyon with a light dusting of snow, 09 May 1979. I had misplaced this slide in another slide box, only found it yesterday.

Excellent composition, Lynn! I know what you mean about old travel slides disappearing from where they should be - some of my favourites are lost and gone forever. I was going to get them printed or something but they went into the twilight zone...

It's good to see this thread revived. Can we hope for more photos as they come out of their hiding spots?

I'm now home in Australia. Lynn has inspired me to fossick in my (too many, mostly untitled) slide boxes to locate the images of my 1979 USA-Canada journey.

Not that I intend to compete with the truly excellent work Lynn has done, and his truly fine images which I admit far surpass mine.

In those long ago days I was more into standing in front of scenes and trying to document what they were in real visual terms, not my personal interpretation of them. Now, almost a half century down the track, I'm more into my personal space of photographing, looking to personal inspiration rather than documentation.

Now and then I ponder, could/should I go back to North America to redo my two long ago journeys (1979 and 1982)? Alas, too much time has passed, the years have wearied me, and I'm now too old for that sort of exertion, and my partner wisely won't let me do it on my own anyway. So it's a few more trips to Southeast Asia for me, where I have family (by relationship) to look after me during my many treks to scenic spots. Time passes, all things change.

Anyway, photos to come, if and when I find them. Two archive boxes done so far, thirteen more to go (he says, sighing).

All this to say, many thanks, Lynn. For the inspiration you have given me.

Thanks for your kind words guys. Much appreciated. DownUnder, wishing you luck fossicking for your old slides, I’ll look forward to seeing the rewards of your efforts.

I’ve decided to depart from my original intention to make this a chronological series, as I now think it makes more sense to take you up the coast from San Francisco, before returning south down Highway 1 to LA and San Diego. My tour group itinerary excluded NorCal, but later I returned to San Francisco to hire a Mustang ($135 for 7 days) and explore northwards. In San Francisco I stayed at the Olympic Hotel for $10/night.
