The third in what might be a trilogy of posts regarding weddings, I'm setting this post for when my cousin's wedding rolls around in October.

What's funny is that he has hardly seen my photography, let alone my wedding photography, but he asked if I would do it, and has thankfully offered to pay. As we're fairly close (but not close enough for him to see much of my work) I've told him just $50 to cover petrol for the day. Given the rising costs of petrol, $50 is going to allow for driving to and halfway back, unless things smooth out by October. Wedding photogs in Melbourne run between $2500 and $4500, but they also include a printed book, perhaps a second shooter. and the ability to put up with more bullcrap that I. I've also known my cousin since he was a foetus, and they are doing the wedding on a strict budget.

My kit will be:

Leica M9 + Distagon 35
Leica SL2-S + Panasonic 50mm f1.8 and Summicron SL 35 ASPH to give me an autofocus alternative to the Distagon 35
Panasonic GX85 + PL 9mm and Oly 45 f1.2 Pro
Phottix LED light panel

Past experience shows that I prefer 35 and 50, with about 25% 90mm equivalent, and a smattering of 18mm equivalent to capture interiors and large groups. There's likely to be about 1500 photos from the day, which I'll cull to a solid 150-300, depending on the size of the party, events of the day, and whatever.

This may only be a trilogy of wedding posts, because I normally don't shoot weddings, only for family, or for clients who are familiar with my work and want that in their personal lives. This may be the last wedding I shoot. Maybe.

Nice kit - good luck!

That M9 + Distagon 35 combination will produce stunning pictures I can imagine, especially with the white/light tones of the wedding dress/decor.

It does. The M9 + Distagon is perfect for weddings within certain parameters of light and distance. I've shot three weddings with the M9 + Distagon and it has come in clutch every time.

Keep it simple. An M9 and Distagon 35mm combination is a great shout. Shoot at a fairly high ISO so you don’t struggle with sharpness. Also, if you have the time, do a recce of the venues to check the light.

I’d suggest they make a photo book that you can order and curate yourself. Another tip: suggest they string up loads of fairy lights at the reception, as they really make the pictures pop. And finally, carry some translucent powder (makeup) for the bride; she’ll start to shine as the day progresses, and she won't forgive you if she looks sweaty in the photos.

If you can get an assistant, perhaps suggest that your friends cover that cost. You could also suggest putting cheap digital keyring cameras on the tables for the guests to use—collect them afterward to make a 'side book' (really good fun). Alternatively, set up a Dropbox with a QR code that is printed and the page left in the tables and ask people to upload their mobile pics. It’s great fun and provides a shedload of extra coverage.

In the end, they’ll have your beautiful images to treasure plus some really fun, candid ones. Oh, and one last thing: for any group shot, fire off at least 10–20 frames. Someone will invariably be pulling a stupid face!

Hope I’m not teaching you to suck eggs! I hate wedding photography—too much stress—but I’ve done it in the past as it was a good earner. GOOD LUCK

SL-2 is no slouch either. Love the M9 too. I don't have the distagon, but several other capable 35s and they do lend themselves to events. The M is so easy to carry around....the SL has AF and higher ISO capability. Carrying both at any given time would be a little too much for me so I'd be switching between them.
Hope you have fun and enjoyable wedding (your cousin too of course).
