Wow, excellent pictures! I didn't know that Olympus made digital with 1.8 lens!

I have considered this camera over and over again. It is a nice size and has the f/1.8 lens. What is the shutter lag like? I heard that it is rather slow.

its doable. A lot of ppl recommend scale focusing this cam by setting it at 3m and f4 or 5.6 and let DOF cover everything. This brings the lag down to a bare minimum. I on the other hand like to shoot at 1.8 so i just use the AF and its still great for me, even indoors. I'm going to do a orchestra shoot (behind the scenes) with this baby on friday so wish me luck!

Here's an article about how Alex Majoli uses compact P&S Olympus cameras in his work:

Went searching on the bay and found out like any other *good* Olys, this one retains the value very well, some used ones sold for $300

A very thought provoking story.

i got mine for about 200USD with all the adaptors etc and a few sets of batteries. Not cheap, but not too bad either since most compact digis with the same amount of control will cost about the same if not more. Am i starting a trend here?

Once in a while Olympus did the right thing, like when they let Mr. Maitani stick that ultra-cool F.Zuiko on the XA, and this 5050 has the *right* lens, which according to my readings, none other newer Oly Camedia or SP-series digital has it (1.8 max aperture).
szekiat, you may not start a trend, but you sure make me feel some D-GAS.
Could you do me a favor and shoot the 5050 next to a soda can or something to give me an idea on the relative size. Ideally, I want to see how much bigger/thicker it is compared to an XA.

sure thing. Besides a soda can, can i use something else like a kitchen mug instead?

Depends on how big your kitchen mug is
The reason I suggested a soda can is because I think the size is pretty much universally the same anywhere you are in the world.

Interesting thread at DPreview regarding this camera

What is for sure... those who did use this camera fall in love and don't want to let go
Makes me feel almost inclined to look around for one

I have actually been interested in its size as well ... judging from some of the ebay auctions it looks about the height of an electro but a bit thicker

still no soda bottle so i used some CDs instead. Surely we all know the size of a CD.
I'm not sure how to hotlink gallery files over so here's the link instead

A friend of mine (doesn't live near here) has one, and I did get a bit of a look at it when she was here last Fall. It is a bit bigger than my Olympus C2000 (as if that helps!), but not much. I'd say it's definitely smaller than an Electro ... more like an Olympus 35SP, though a different shape, of course. The thickness is (mainly?) because of the hand grip.

CD is even better, thanks bro
Wow, that's smallish, I think the 35 SP is wider/longer than a CD, right, Trius?
man, I feel the D-GAS getting stronger... ugh!
btw, I just peek around your gallery, you are one talented dude! I love your pictures.
