16 lens pocket camera

I'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to come up with that concept. But then they may have just been waiting for better camera modules.

52MB picture for kids soccer. Those eggheads aren't married soccer moms, but computers.
I forgot which military project has hundreds of cameras to zoom and stay on course.

Skeptical since there are no real specs out there for it.

I wonder also.
Do we live in a world now where a phony press release is used to gain potential product interest info ?
This sure feels like the Konos Rangefinder.

Not interested in such a product but the tech making itself over to iPhone would be cool.

I'm curious to see what sort of sensor is in it. The sample they posted looks very nice, smooth gradations and much better subject separation than I'd expect from a small-sensor camera. Seems that obtaining high resolution, wide DR and shallow DOF through composited small-sensor images is going to catch on, seeing lots of that lately.

If you check out the videos that accompany the site, it would seem that each lens has its own small, individual sensor. I would hazard a guess that any shallow DOF effect is software generated, rather than as a result of their fastest lens (f/1.2).

I am also surprised that it took that long to an array camera concept to arrive. I guess that the 13MP modules are (now classical and widespread) Sony IMX series.
Take the information out of all modules, run it through software heavily. The magic of computational photography.

I'd like to try the thing.

I have ordered one and I will post my impressions on this forum when I get it. If I have impressions before my own camera ships, I will attempt to post them here as well, if possible.

I share the skepticism of many: I do not believe that a small camera, that looks unconventional and has fuzzy specs, made by a bunch of people who haven't made cameras before, and who aspire to stuff said camera in one's pocket, will ever succeed. They should take their miniature camera, which I believe was made for video!, and go back to Jena.

An interesting concept. However I don`t buy into their argument that terrific photos require terrific equipment. 🙂
