27 or the new 35?

my original thought was about the 27 and the new 35...because the new 35 is smaller than the 1.4 version...said to be as sharp if not sharper and i thought it would be more competitive with the 27...
having 2 35mm lenses, one fast and one not as fast it seemed to me that the 2 35s would be less competition for each other and both more complementary...as someone above noted, more like a cron vs lux comparo...
some folks like the 40 pov as it sits mid 35 and 50 and some don't like cause it's seems 'blah' to them...hence my curiosity...also as i'm thinking about selling the 27 for the 35 myself i wanted to hear the thoughts of others on this.

If anyone asked me...one should never sell a 1.4/35mm. It's my favorite fuji lens.... I love it wide open.

+1 ... not selling mine. My son has one for his XE1 too (won't lend him mine, snicker). While I think that it was a yawner for other lenses, FW 4.0 seemed to help the 35 f/1.4's AF a good bit. overall, f/2 just isn't f/1.4 at 50mm for certain shots, nuh-uh.

well, as i get older i notice a trend. when i want wide, i go wider, and when i want compression, i go longer. that mid-range between 28 and 40, not so much. i'd rather have the new, small 35 than the 27, for sure.

I've been waiting for the 35/2 since it was first rumored many moons ago. But now that its here, I'm not sure why I need it (I already have the 35/1.4). Some here mention the focus speed improvement, but the 35/1.4 on my X-T1 seems plenty fast for street photography. I think a lot of the 35/1.4's "slow focus speed" talk came from the early days when the lens first came out, along with the X-Pro1. Now days, following many firmware upgrades and the intro of the X-T1, I don't think the 35/1.4 deserves the slow-focusing label any longer.

Now I think the only reason I'd consider getting the 35/2 is if upcoming testing shows some significant improvement in image quality over the 35/1.4. Otherwise, I don't see the need for me.

Compared to the focus speed on the xt1 and 10.. On the xp1 and xe1, IMHO it is still slow. On my xt1 it is fine, but not the fastest af lens from Fuji.

The 35mm f/2 was no speed demon when I checked it out at the Photo Expo this weekend. I was disappointed...but then again, I'm always disappointed with Fuji. I want to love these cameras, but they don't match the way I photograph. I know that offends some, but we all have our expectations and ways of photographing.

No need at all to qualify or apologize. Quite right, we shoot differently and it's only reasonable to differ in opinion. I shoot Fuji and like X gear, but appreciate the diversity of views.

i'm pretty much convinced to buying the new 35...if i can afford it i'll keep the 27 as well so i always have a street ready camera handy...

the 27 and 35 are pretty close to each other...i don't have a 35 now...the 35 would be a great street camera as well...so many choices...so little money...😉

That would be my concern. Tough call, but I do think that the 27 is excellent enough to stand by itself.

The 27mm is not only small but renders nicely, like a Tessar, IMO. As a professional using only Fuji now, I don't sell or trade lenses as new ones come out. They are more valuable to me as back-up and overlap in focal lengths.

oh for sure the 27 is a fine lens and such a perfect size on the xe1/2...in many ways it strikes a nice balance, not too wide not too narrow...the 35 has a pov that many prefer and use well.

I have an xe2 and an xm1. The 27 on the xm1 makes a nice compact package.
The 16-50 lives on the xe2 which also hosts the rokinon 12.

If I have available cash when the xpro2 comes out, I would be interested. (May have to liquidate some existing inventory.) It may be sold with the new 35 as a package.

I already own the 35/1.4 too. But the "Fujicron" is so sexy. I see me using it with my X-T1 on my anual hiking trip in the scottish highlands. Waterproof...

I'd take any lens I had to the Highlands. And might just trade it for the ultimate single malt ... OK, no doubt I'd trade it.

OK, I went a different way. As much as I am (still) enamoured with the X100T and think it is a "better" choice in many ways, I succumbed to an evil-bay auction for an X-Pro1 with 18-55. I plan on buying OM and Hex AR adaptors (maybe more!) and shoot manual focus and mostly b&w.

Part of my "rationale" ... oh never mind. I rationalize that the X200 is coming, and the price of a used XPro makes more sense. I'm sticking to that story.

So it is! Little or no flare, sharp throughout. Just a little too big to take along so I've got the 18mm fixed to the X-E2. That 35 f2 is mighty tempting, though.
It seems there should be a firmware upgrade for the X-E2 soon, incorporating some serious AF goodness. Looking forward to that.
