Is it possible to use a 28 mm lens on a Leica CL without an external viewfinder?

I know the Minolta CLE has 28 mm framelines but I'm curious if you could use one on the CL too.

Yes, you can, but the viewfinder will not show you everything that will be on the film. You'll get a bit more than the viewfinder shows. But that's okay, just frame tightly. Accurate framing is not a RF camera type strong point anyway.

I think that you'd be "close enough" using the entire finder area. Since the frame lines move as you focus try to keep the frame lines centered in relation to the edges of the finder. The CL finder lets you move your eye around quite a bit, to the point of putting the rangefinder patch in one corner of the field and seeing quite a bit outside the frame line on the opposite corner.

I preferred using a 28/40 combo with my CL over my CLE, actually, b/c I found the entire VF approximated the coverage enough for a 28, and the 40 framelines are much bigger and better marked than those on the CLE. My thoughts on it-
Of course, now I use a .85 M6 finder with 28mm and find no problems doing that, so I might not be the one to judge.

Ahhh, you must not wear glasses! I had difficulty with the 35mm framelines on my .85mag M6.

It's true, I don't wear glasses - and I get my eye very close to the VF, I can imagine it would change things a lot if I wore them.

The finder outside the framelines on CL is wery close to 28mm. Just remember that when you ltake your picture the world is looking inside your head. hjagis

I used to own a CL & used a Canon 28/3.5 on it. I used the whole vf as my finder and felt that it work quite well. You will get a small bit more than you can see but 1) not enough to make a big issue most times & 2) I don't consider having some room to crop a bit to be a terrible thing.

The CL is a nice camera to use with a 28/50/90 set.
