There seems to be quite a collection of these lenses out there. There's a Canon 35mm f1.5, an f1.8, an f2 and an f2.8. I've read the praise for the very first one (the f1.5), but I'm curious to know whether the others are equally deserving... mostly because I'd like to add one to my inventory.

Not a very fast one, I should add. I'm interested on the f1.8... and even the f2.8. What do you say?

Thanks!

Of all their 35's, I actually have both that interest you, the 1.8 and 2.8. I can not comment on their design -not my thing, but outwardly they appear to be same basic lens. That said, I seem to always grab the 2.8. I really like both of them though. Well built, nice sized, and rather handsome lenses in black/chrome. I am very pleased with their output:cost.

I just had a quick play with them. They definitely share some common components, but the 2.8 is actually a longer (bigger) lens than the 1.8. Subtle, but there is a difference. Of course, the 1.8 glass is of a greater diameter, but the bodies are the same. I don't know why I keep chasing Summicrons with these on the shelf. I am going to shoot them both this weekend!

Thanks for the thorough post, Jeff! I am actually torn between them... because I want one of them for my M4.

Your photographs are quite lyrical too. I liked the third one especially.

I have the Canon 35/1.8, 35/1.5, 35/2.8. I sold the 35/2.
The 35/2.8 is very sharp and small.
The 35/1.5 has a temper. It flares when shooting directly at a light source. Looks good for vintage B&W style images. The 35/1.8 is small and very good. It can flare.

The 35/2 is praised a lot by users. I got a lens that was never used (from the shelf). I traded it for some lens, I think. I got instead a pre-asph Lux, and I already have the 8 element Summicron 35/2.

Here's a colour image from the 35/2. A great little lens often compared to the 35 cron. I like its handling. Feels like a mini slr lens. Mine is very much a user in appearance- no hood no filter, but the glass is fine.

I've got the 35/2.8 and it's a great little lens! I bought this one because of it's generally favorable reputation, and I've never needed anything faster.

Works fine on my M2 (with adapter), but really nice to use on a screwmount body like a IIIf or Canon IVSB.

My Canon 35/2 I traded for a 35 Summicron V2. It was a great lens, period. Sharper than my Summicron, handled beautifully with a very short throw. Sorry I sold it. Someday I'll buy another.

I have the 35/1.8 and it's a very sharp lens, sharper than my CV 35/1.4 SC. And the bokeh is lovely on low contrast backgrounds. It matches the Canon 50/1.4 nicely.

Sometimes, the bokeh can get a little harsh on high contrast backgrounds (just like the 50/1.4). My copy doesn't flare or bloom as much as I'd like it to (although most people think that's a positive). Not sure if that's what you're after, but for vintage bloom, the Jupiter-12 35/2.8 is great -- and very well priced.

In addition to Dante's comments, Sean Reid has two pieces on Luminous landscape dealing with these lenses:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/fastlensreview.shtml
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/rd-1-lens.shtml
I have the 1.8, 2.0, 2.8
Sean rates the 2.0 and 2.8 highly as sunny day lenses. I found the 1.8 very nice in black and white, where it seemed to give a nice 3D, plasticity, sense of space to the image.
Haven't shot the 2.8 and don't have the 1.5.
Good luck with your search and acquisition.
Giorgio
