40.5mm filter with same diameter upper and lower thread

Hi Forum,

I bought a 40.5mm Hoya UV(C) filter for a Jupiter 8 lens online along with a vented lens hood. Both screw on to the lens as expected however I had hoped to be able to screw the hood in to filter and unfortunately the upper thread of the filter seems to be of a smaller diameter than 40.5.

Can anyone suggest a 40.5mm filter which is capable of receiving a 40.5mm hood?

Other 50mm filters I have are all able to receive 50mm hoods/filters but perhaps there's a problem doing this with the smaller diameters.

Odd. As far as I'm aware all Hoya filters have the same thread on the front as the back. I've owned enough Hoya 40.5mm filters and never had trouble with hoods.

What make is the hood? Maybe it's just paint on the hood's thread that's stopping it screw on? Or perhaps either front filter thread or rear hood thread is damaged?
 
It's standard that a filter has the same thread back and front, not having this would be pretty unusual. As said above, check for damage or paint etc. I've used many filters of various sizes and never had one without the same thread back and front.
 
With Hoya filters, in particular, I would expect to be adequate quality -- with the same filter diameter, thread, etc. front and back. There are different levels of quality among Hoya brand filters, but all of them are decent.


I suspect an issue with the hood, or foreign material as suggested above.
 
Hi everyone, thanks very much for your replies and sorry for my delayed response. I remembered that I also have a Kiev 40.5mm yellow filter stored away. This also fails to screw in to the Hoya filter. So, I think it's the fault of the Hoya since you say the upper thread should be the same. It could be that it's a fake Hoya, I bought it online from a supplier in China. I'll try buying another filter from a different seller, let's see if i have more luck.

A fake Hoya filter with different front an back thread! Go figure!
Hopefully they are not sold on Amazon too. But we must be careful, this is another red flag.

It may just be a coincidence but I too have had a Hoya filter with faulty threads. Mine was a 52mm diameter filter and in my case I bought it recently from the remainder bin at a local camera store. The filter was in perfect condition so far as was visible by the eye but simply would not screw onto the lens or any lens due to faulty threads. I returned and swapped it. I assumed mine was a real Hoya which just happened to have poor quality control.

Hi yes, but I bought a used one , made in the Philippines. It works fine. The other one I bought new on eBay from China. I'm fairly sure now that it's a fake. When I looked more carefully recently in good light I saw that it has no real thread at all on the upper part of the filter....
 
I think that the non working thread filters are fakes. Hoya is a reputable brand and I don't think they lack quality control.
 
escutro, I'm glad you've got a usable filter now.

I'd forgotten about a Russian 40.5mm Orange filter I had that didn't have a front thread, your thread has just reminded me.
