if you need a hood for a 35 i have several in black, series vi.
no filters though.

also, gandy sells a great small, black 40mm hood.
i use that one as it cuts into the field of view the least of all the shades i've seen.
30 bucks from cameraquest.
but it does not take series vi filters, if you really want a uv or use filters regularly, then you'll likely need a series vi adapter/hood as 40mm filters are hard to find.
there were a couple this weekend on ebay and they went for way more than they were worth.
also, the canon filters are flat fronted, no grooves = no hood if you use the filter.

I am using a 34 to VI size adapter with a VI size Canon hood on my 35mm. Great thing about (Leitz) 39mm size filters is that they fit in a VI adapter if you mount the filter in reverse: the threads pointing forwards. I glued a single sheet of surplus film in the hood to fit better around the 39mm.
This way I can still use 39mm filters on all lenses!

there is lots of info on series filters on rff, but in brief, the hood is a 2 piece unit that unscrews from each other and a series filter is inserted in the middle.
i have a black canon hood with a tiffen adapter that screws into 40mm and it is a series hood.
i think i might also have a series vi uv filter here also.

neither vignettes at all.
they both cut into the field of view while composing.
i think the gandy hood interferes less.
i prefer the gandy hood but then i don't use filters normally.
40mm sized filters are very hard to find and the canon filters do not allow the use of a screw in hood, only a clamp on hood.

I know djon, but it is the VI filter size that matters... VI must be about 40mm, I guess. 39mm is the filter thread size.

This will do. You can pick up very common Series VI filters and a common Series VI hood in place of the retaining ring. The hard part is getting the 42mm slip on adaptor ring.

If you use a rectangular hood on the Series VI adapter, you must use a clamp-on or slip-on 42mm adapter, to go around the 42mm outside diameter of the 35/2 lens. Otherwise the hood won't line up, since the thread starts aren't controlled.
You can only use the 40mm screw-in Series VI adapter with a round hood.
I use the rectangular hood for 35/2.8 and 50/1.8 on my 35/1.8, with no vignetting. I suspect that the slightly smaller (and much more common) rectangular hood for 35/2.8 and 50/1.9 would work fine on the 35/1.8. For a picture of that hood, see http://kevincameras.com/gallery/albvp10 .
Dante Stella claims that the 35/2.0 requires Canon's own (rare) round clamp-on hood for this lens. But I don't think I've ever seen even a picture of that hood. (Maybe Dante has confused it with the W-50 hood for the 35/1.5?)

i always have great fear the push on hoods will fall off.
my 85/2 hood is a push on.
i know that the rectangular hoods use the push on adapter.
but that thing is huge, i think the 35/2 lens could fit INTO the hood. 🙂

interestingly, i'm off to the post office soon, to pay for an ebay win, 3 rubber collapsible hoods...one is 40mm. all 3 for 99 cents.

Hey, Ritz Camera has the right hood for the Canon 35/2.0. The S-42. Mint with case, just $149. (That's probably cheap compared to a Leica hood!)
