50mm, but which?

Walter -- did you decide yet? Just curious. There are so many good choices out there. Lots of good advice on this thread as well.

Although prices are creeping up, there are still lots of good (used) lenses out there. Reasonable prices can be found with luck and patience.

I have the ZM 50/2, it's a beautiful lens. I also have the Summicron DR 50/2 (no goggles), another timeless lens. Both are very different animals. I enjoy using each of these lenses, but for different purposes.

Sounds like the DR was taken apart and the locking bearing is at the opposite position of where it should be. It should only lock at 1m in close focus range.
Good luck with it.

I came to the conclusion that between all modern 50mm f/2, the only thing that matters is the Price and the ergonomics.
I would go with any of the 3 last crons, the planar or the Hex.
I try to stay away from Voigtlander quality control hiccups for "easy to get" focal lengths.

I can only give an opinion on 50/2 Hexanon and 4th version (focusing tab) Summicron. I used to have the Hexanon. While well built, it was indeed, bland (for color photography), as one of the previous posters said. The Summicron is in every respect superior and perhaps the best lens I've ever used, RF or SLR. Don't fool yourself into believing that the market lets you get Summicron quality for a fraction of the price.

Don't sleep on the Voigtlander 40mm 1.4! Great rendition from this lens for cheap. Th Zeiss planar f2 is an absolute masterpiece. Sharpest lens i've ever used and the color is always perfect.
