i believe it's called style.

the qualities that you call in question add texture and help to weave a story...for me.

I love Helen's pictures/style. It shows some kinda intimacy that I am very fond of. Maybe I am a Newyorker and I am biased.

Well, if you are talking about all blurry/out of focus pictures are not good pictures, I am sorry, I am out of the argument.

It is OK to "fail to see".
An image does not have to be sharp to be beautiful.

Well sorry I'm not full of praise like everyone else. Yes I can see you're a forum favorite here but it doesn't mean I need to agree like everyone else and need conform for the sake of it. I didn't challenge your position here on the RFF, nor did I intend to upset you. But I am not responsible for you feeling that way. I made a comment openly, challenging the content and presentation of your images. I do this all the time and expect it from my peers. If no one commented on how great they were, I get the impression that you'd also be upset.

Your shots didn't offend me so don't make this worse for yourself. I say this because you're being overly sensitive about my comments. My comments weren't accusations but obviously that doesn't matter to you because you'll see things the way you prefer to. You're obviously used to receiving praise all the time you've forgotten to stop and look at what makes a great picture. If they were great images I would've agreed, but feel they weren't and couldn't understand what people were seeing in them, but I know now. It's because people like you and the work you usually do.

Now if the OOF style is your thing I can respect that, but they were not good pictures. I understand that you were practicing with it for the first time and respect that, but I am entitled to my opinion without such accusations on your part. No doubt your friends here will come to your defense but I expected a more professional, dignified response from you regarding your images, especially considering how popular you are here on this forum. We all take bad pictures at times, and I certainly don't 'expect' praise every time I show people my images, and neither do I become rude about it if the response is not to my liking. Instead, one can learn from such feedback and make it positive, as aposed to the opposite.

I agree, but please explain why the images are great. i am not being sarcastic or insulting. I have a difference of opinion and asking for clarification. If the images are great please explain why you think so.

Its a perfectly reasonable comment and question to ask.

Sometimes, an image conveys a feeling. I did not use the word "great", but I said "beautiful". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Greatness comes to a few.

Thank you for your answer, and you're quite correct. Unfortunately I don't see these images the way you do but that should be ok and I shouldn't be attacked for doing so.

I also think those images show a lot of beauty present in the photographer's eye and also in the images because they convey her intentions: she was worried about capturing the instants she saw, instead of being worried about ultimate sharpness and focus in other moment...

Hey Helen: you're very sweet, and you're a great photographer, and an artist... And I envy your 75 1.4 so bad! (But please don't tell Roland...:)) By now, all I got is my lousy big 90 Summicron... At least its nice bokeh is making me stronger... :)

Enjoy such a marvelous lens!

Cheers,

Juan

I'm not going to go into the who side of good/bad photography because everyone has a different style, but I expected a 'sweeter' response from her, and not the rude insulting reply I received. A photographer would be able to explain her images without getting so offensive to someone who may not necessarily see things the way she does.

Helen may be a lovely person but that's not the impression she's giving me now. I'm not going to take it personally, and neither should she, as we don't even know each other. I'll just put it down to her being sweet but having a bad day. Cheers

Only the sweetest can be rude... :)

Maybe you did hurt her a lot more than she hurt you... And not because of what you said: she trusts herself, but because you said it... And maybe we should forget all this... And by the way, I respect you and your posting and images here: I remember clearly your name... No one here has been against you in any way...

Cheers,

Juan

Kristian, if you care so much about her and what she is trying to convey with her images, why don't you show her the courtesy by sendIng her a pm or email, rather than in front of everyone? If you are really thinking about her and her work, and not yourself, it just seems like a courteous thing to do (to me).

Thats a fair point to make. Anyway I'd like to offer my apology to Helen for challenging her images so openly. It was not a request of the poster and therefor in future will refrain from making such comments.

Sometimes I wish I was an amateur again and could enjoy imagery the way I used to. I am trying guys ;-) Helen, I am sorry, keep shooting the way that makes you most happy, I'm just envious I don't get to do the same as often as I'd like.

feel free to take a look at my stuff and make comment...i was asking for this the other day here (more about my style, really) and got some interesting feedback.
i'm an openly admitted amateur but like feedback to help me alomg the way.

Actually I agree with this post. This needed to be said. I'm not really talking about this situation in particular, but way too often terrible photos are praised here and I too dont often understand why. What I dont understand even more - when someone is to ask a question about it or offer a critique - people get offended, threads get closed, etc.
I think if person is willing to post a photo here - they should expect ANY kind of response - positive or negative and not get upset or personal about it.
As far as this particular situation goes - I too would expect photos to be a bit sharper. I do like some of Helen's photos and style, yet not in this case. After all - what is the point in getting a lens like Summilux 75/1.4 and have blurry images? If OOF if your style - nothing is wrong with it, but wouldnt Holga do the job? Maybe I'm wrong, but to me - a reason to use any one particular lens is to be able to us it's best features, which in this case are lost.
I thnk people should be a bit more honest when they comment on photos - in all honesty they are not all wonderful in any thread. I think we all would benefit from honest critique. No reason to get upset or deffensive.

This has been a sensitive issue at RFF from the start. People get very upset and their feelings are hurt. We had a critique thread that exploded in negative feelings. It is now more a supportive atmosphere where it is not encouraged to say sharp things.

Maybe we also need such a friendly corner?

The 75 isn't really that heavy. And it is big, but I've always thought it balanced nice. I wear it over my shoulder with the lens pointing in rather then out so it's not hanging out there, it lets the weight of the camera hand comfortably towards your body.

It's such a special lens, I like it best at 5.6, it's sharp as nails but I've always thought it still retained that character you'll see more wide open.

Everyone Raves about the Bokeh but the lens does so much more then that.

It certainly wasn't my intent to sound so critical. I guess when we say things on the net it doesn't come across the same as if I was saying it in person....something I have to work on. If Helen would like me to offer critique, I am happy to oblige but I don't think that will be happening.

At the end of the day I should've been more careful with my wording, or not spoken at all, end of story.....now back to the 75 Lux!!!
