Beware of Claws
This reminds me of a sunny day at the Pt. Reyes lighthouse, everything was great, until the leather strap on my binoculars gave way and they crashed on the cement. They had sentimental value since I got them at the Two Guys department store in Neptune, NJ that was walking distance from my grandparents' house. They weighed a ton too, but couldn't stand up to the concrete. I replaced them with a leightweight pair of Bausch and Lomb, good quality but no personal history for me. Two Guys had a camera dept. where I used to gaze in wonder at the Minox spy cameras and other gear as a kid... since then I swore to periodically check my straps... as I'm sure you will too, now, Joe...

sorry to hear that, Joe.
Chin up Joe, she is your favorite tool, but just a tool. Your plans to have her CLA'd when repaired will make her better than before. Until then you will still be making fine photographs.

Joe, add me to the list of members offering condolences, for whatever it is worth. I am really sorry for you. I think we have all had it happen at one time or another, with varying results. I have too. It sure takes the fun out of it for a while, or sometimes longer; when a loved tool suddenly becomes useless until a repair. Even worse, was a house fire we had about 12 years ago. We lost a lot, including many cameras and other photo gear. I didn't loose my interest in photography completely, but it has taken me years to get back to loving the actual taking of photos again for other than family snapshots. I do feel your pain.
Still, it seems you are doing well with the situation, and when it is repaired, you should have an even better tool, and a story to tell. Good luck and Godspeed in getting it back to working condition.

again, many thanks to all of you.
my friends have little idea of what it feels like so it's nice to have you folks.
this is the second camera i have dropped in my 35 years or so of shooting. the first was also a canon, an old f1, dropped from about waist level to the floor of my in law's living room. thank goodness for thick shag carpeting, no impact damage at all. picked it up and went about my business.
the worst feeling i have ever experienced though was many years ago. the family had planned a day at the park and of course i was going to take some gear. we packed up the car and headed out. when we arrived i could not find my camera bag, an old army bag i was using at the time. i looked everywhere but nothing.
needless to say i back tracked and (luckily) found the bag, on the curb, in front of my house. untouched and in tact.

Good to hear that you are back. Mark was very fast with emails and a repair of my Yashica Mat.

"...thank goodness for thick shag carpeting..."
Never thought I'd ever hear those words. Wondering how many of us had our first sexual experiences on shag carpets. Hey, is that why they're called shag carpets?

Cameras are like bunnies
Joe,
a bit late, but I would like to offer my condolences too. And a story to maybe cheer you up a little. A few weeks ago I was scanning some photos while my three year old daughter was trying to get my attention. "Go play a little", I told her. And she did. While working on the computer I heard the normal noises of my daughter talking to herself, handling toys, dropping them...
Some time later I realized I had to go look if everything was allright. Then I saw that she was actually playing 'photographer' with all of my cameras that she could reach: most of my fixed lens rangefinders and a few Feds. Luckely she is still close to the ground and I could only find some damage to an Industar lens. I told her that I wasn't happy with her playing with my toys, but well... it was my own fault. I shouldn't have sent her away like that and I can hardly blame her for wanting to do what her father does. I'll soon have to buy her a camera of her own.

Joe, sorry to hear of the accident.
Worst comes to worst, buy a beater P and use the parts off that.
If the chrome finish is damaged (I couldn't quite tell) then maybe this is when you get to make a black P.

just sent off the last email to a prospective repair person.
did my best to keep it local or at least in canada but it seems unlikely that the p will remain close to home. more likely it will be an american spa.
the saga continues...

ok, the best responses came in from in essex camera, mark hama and focalpoint.
by best i mean they sounded competent and ready to do the work.
i'll pack up the camera and lens tonight and will need to decide what address goes on the box by morning.

Joe FWIW I recently sent off a really filthy and jammed Canonet to Essex and it came back in incredible shape and with two free batteries for the cost of a standard CLA. You send the cam, they send you an estimate. You write the check and send it and the fixed camera comes back in 7-8 days. Highly recommended.

thanks peter!
i have to admit i'm leaning in that direction.

I've heard only good of Essex. OTOH, the only one I've experiance with is Mr. Hama and that was positive. I doubt either will do ill by you.
God speed,
William

I sent Essex my Nikon F, asking them to fix the Photomic meter, replace seals, fix the shutter (low speeds not working), and do a complete CLA. They did it for a very reasonable price ($175) and in a reasonable time. I do have one beef, which is that when I sent the camera to them the mirror lock-up worked, when the camera came back the mirror lock-up no longer worked. I don't know if they caused it, though.
