Al Kaplan has passed away :(

We lost a good friend, one that enjoyed people! He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and swapping ideas with everyone! Our loss is Heaven's gain!

I didn't get the chance to speak to Al as often as I would like, but will miss him.

Please add my condolences to his family.

Ever since this sad news came to us, I have noticed there's two Al Kaplan-threads featured on the RFF home page. One is this thread, the other is the t-shirt fund raiser thread.

Shouldn't we get rid of the latter? At the time, it might be rather inappropriate to sell t-shirts with Al's face on them to pay for his medical expenses...?

Johan: helping out with medical expenses and the funeral [if his family accepts such a gesture] would be a good idea.

What can be added to the sentiments already expressed? Only that I hope his loved ones become aware of the real affection felt around the world for Al.

Very sad news, may he rest in peace and condolences to his family.

Thank you for sharing your experience and encouragement, Al. I still cannot believe you have left us. The world of photography will never be the same without you IMO.
RIP, Al.

Johan and Raid: If I remember, I suggested using the money that has been and will be collected to institute a prize in Al's name for the best picture by an RFF photographer under 25 years of age.

a good thing to repeat here at this time, I had forgotten that. Should the original starters of the thread see this fit, then a new thread that reflects this would be a good idea, I reckon.

All of this so no confusion arises ofcourse.

I was unaware of the agreed upon prize for photography. As long as we agree on something good to leave in Al's name, this would be fine with me.

Agreed.

We've discussed donating the funds to Al's favorite charity. A family friend will be asking Al's kids for their thoughts on this tomorrow at the funeral. Al gave a great deal of himself to those around him. He'd probably be pleased to see us help one of his favored organizations.

The prize idea is great one, too.

Al is an eternally cool cat. I will miss him a great deal. I was supposed to see him next month when I will be back in Miami. I knew him in person for seven years and got along with him very well, seeing him twice a year when I was in Miami on business. We were good friends and shared quite a bit about photography and life. I received the generous end of things, and for that I will always be grateful. I really feel for the family and his other friends. He was a one of a kind.

I know its not my call and welcome any different views, but I feel we should honor the initial intentions of the thread if the family have a use for the money. Only if they can spare it could we institute a prize with it like Payasam suggested.

It probably will be best to comment any further on this after the funeral service. My thoughts go out to Al's loved ones.

Agreed. A family friend will be getting back to me to convey their wishes to us.
