Alternatives to Flickr

People get fussy when something they did not pay for turns out be not exactly what they want.

Darn those freeloading free services.

Lots of options in this free market. Stop whining, go shopping.

... I renewed my flickr subscription at the end of March ... as for shopping I'm doing that here, you did read the original post?

Flickr for hosting, tumblr or Wordpress for presentation. Once set up, it takes just a click to post a photo on your blog. Plus you get the advantage of a social network and the layout options of a Blog. Works for me, but i'm neither a pro nor a paying member.

I am inclined to agree. At first I didn't like the new layout and cancelled my Pro account but I have to say that I am now used to it. It does almost everything it did before and I don't have to pay for the service 😀.

Over the last few days I have tried 500px and Google+ as alternatives. One is a portfolio type site for your best work whereas the other is a full blown social network with a photo section sort of tagged on. I've decided to stick with Flickr for now since there's nothing I can find that offers the same combined photografic/social media type experience for me at the moment (though I have to say Google+ comes close). Not sure what I'll do if Flickr implement further changes!

If someone is interested in self-hosting, I am currently messing with http://www.koken.me
It is free and determined to stay that way plus has several templates to choose from such that HTML know how is not required. It also has an export plugin for Lightroom that works quite well. I'm just playing around with it at one of my domains http://photopriest.com which is very much a work in progress at the moment.

I have several accounts but photobucket is the one I continue to use. But I'm tremendously unimaginative. Is there anything else to photo hosting other than photo, thumbnails, tags and maybe a pretty background to galleries? A serious question, since there might be *something* I'm missing out on...

Interesting class name here. I was snooping at the new (improved?) Flickr seeing how they did some of their layout and came across a class named "new-footer-tight-ass", used for the body. 🙂
