I want to mount a filter on to my 28/3.5 Color Skopar. OK, so I bought a B+W UV 39mm filter - so far so good, but how do I mount the filter on to the lens? I thought that I would just need to remove the built in shade on the lens and then fit the filter - however the shade won't seem to budge. Does anyone know if this shade is indeed removable, and if not, how do you go about mounting a filter?

yes, it is removable. Just becareful not to squeeze the ring during removal. Best to use your palm and press into the whole lens (circle face onto palm) or use a rubber band around the ring and gently twist.

Good luck.

Agree. Don't squeeze and don't grip more of the shade than you need to. Just the edges should be enough. If you've got big hands/fingers it's easy to try to turn the shade AND the mount it's attached to.

Someone suggested pressing down onto the reverse side of a mouse pad and twisting the lens counter clockwise the other day to remove a stuck filter ... it would probably work for this!

I find it easier to leave the lens cap on and turn it by pressing against the front of the cap and twisting your hand. The shade comes off in the cap.

What Rob said. For some reason that works much easier than taking the shade off without cap.

A fat rubber band is always in my camera bag to get off a stuck shade when even the lens cap trick doesn't work. You just use the rubber band for its grip, it can be quite loose on the shade and doesn't have to be tight at all. Works every time.
