I know you guys hate them, but i have a question that i think is quite relevant.

I recently bought a Bessa R, such a fun user friendly camera to use. Yes the shutter is a bit clunky, but for the ease of usability i am more than happy to make the trade off.

Maybe ill post a review if you guys would like it, although the review that is pinned helped me make the decision.

Ok enough about the lightbox i care about making images so hence my discussion about optics. The Bessa R originally came with Jupiter-8, which is a very good version and the optics seem quite good. There is only one huge problem for me at least, the lack of click stops. I hate the fact that i physically have to remove my eye from the VF to get a specific aperture. So i am on the look for another lens. I think i am going to stick with a 50. Now i bought a rangefinder for two reasons the first being the focusing the second is the compactness. I think the second criteria rules out the nokton and although there is the color skopar, i think i am more partial to the older looking rendering of lenses.

In my mind i have narrrowed it down to 3 possible lenses, the collapsible summicron, the summitar, and the summarit. Now the summarit two things concern me the first being weight the second being the usability of f/1.5 and the worth of of the extra stop gain. When looking at flickr images i seem to enjoy the rendering at f/1.5, but hey i cant really tell from looking at pixels that take up less than half a screen.

Now the summitar seems nice but i think it is a pretty low contrast lens and that kind of bugs me.

Thus i am left with the collapsible summicron, looking through flickr is like running through a maze, you just loose track of the goal and get frustrated, as i never know what version of the summicron i am looking at. From a couple of "verifiable" images i enjoy the rendering wide open both in color and black and white. Can you guys just give me an opinion on this lens overall.

If you don't feel like reading my essay in short i am looking for:

Users opinions about the rendering the main points of interest for me being sharpness, contrast, weight, click stops i think is a new must for me and the "look" for both the collapsible summicron and the summarit. I dont want a lens that lacks contrast but i do want a lens with medium to high contrast that won't risk blowing out hilights. In terms of weight, the lightest possible. Sharpness i am looking for only in aperture greater than f/8 otherwise smooth leica glow sounds great. The look i am looking for is any real old style rendering which i think are both check in these two lenses.

P.S. Sorry for posting in the VC forum but you guys seem really helpful.

i have only summarit and i am very happy with it. but one thing you have to know is that it look is really old school - swirly bokeh and all - lot of detail at f1.5 but you dont have sharpness as with new lenses. check out my galleries - you will see some bigger photos - if you want some in bigger resolution just say which i will send you bigger.

Quick line up of my opinion here:
Summitar 50f2: Good lens, low contrast and as they are now 50+years old a bit prone to jamming aperture blades. Very nice OOF - but contrast at f2 is low!
Summarit 50f1.5: Predecessor to the Summilux vers 1. Heavy and quite flare prone. Low contrast at f1.5 - but remarkably sharp for a lens that dates back to the 1936 Xenon. Difficult and expensive to find a clean one - and not cheap to fix if it isn't. Hoods are tricky to find.
Summicron 50f2 Collapsible: Medium contrast, not as sharp as the successors in rigid format. Expensive if you want one with perfect front element (and difficult to find with that as the front coating is very soft). Can flare badly.
Elmar 50f2.8 - generally a better lens than the Summicron Collapsible and usually found in better shape too.
Nokton 50f1.5: Modern, high tech design - for the money the most you will get. Useful at f1.5 too.
Ciolor Skopar 50f2.5: Unsung hero - damn good lens, small and compact. Higher contrast than any of the Leica LTM.
Alternatives: Nikkor 50f2 LTM. Very good lens, compact and heavy! Will focus very close - though it cuts out the rangefinder at 0.7 m.
Nikkor 50f1.4 LTM. Not cheap, but it was one of the best 50's in late 50 and in the 60's. Still works very well and reasonably easy to find a clean sample.
Canon 50f1.4: Only rival to the Nikkor 50f1.4 - and it might even be better. Build quality is uneven, occasionally they feel "gritty" in aperture and focus.
There are more LTM 50's - but these are the ones I have and know how they render images.

i think i am sold on the canon, not too much contrast yet not too little. Handles color well renders quite beautifully at f/1.4. Three questions though click stops? weight? and pricing?

The Canon 50/1.4 has click stops.

It's not a heavy lens. The price ranges from a typical $250~$300.

I really like the Summitar - lowish contrast wide open, but stopped down unlikely you would notice a huge difference with the Summicron. If you have a hybrid workflow you can always bump up the contrast/saturation in post processing.
