Another Zorki 4K owner. Hi!

Ih, nice first pics. i got mine today. im anxious to get out and start shooting. But i have two questions. First my jupiter 8 when focused on minimum distance it is less than 1 meter. i mean, it marks less than on meter on the barrel of the lens. I hadnt measured distances yet. This is normal? Secondly, how do i know which frame i am?

If the lens shows infinity at the other end, all is well. It's normal for the lens to go slightly past the 1m mark but it shouldn't be by much. If the infinity mark doesn't line up then check to see that the aperture scale does line up, you might need to move them both.

There's a frame counter set into the centre of the wind-crank, you can see it clearly on the top picture above. Load your film, wind on twice and then turn the counter dial until the "0" mark lines up with the fixed mark. Each frame after that will advance the count. The counter dial has a knurled centre so you can use your thumb or finger to grip it, it may be a little stiff to move but it will go.

Well, the infinity mark does indeed line up well. Thanks. I guess my camera is in pretty good shape. The rangefinder seems calibrated too, although this is my first experience with a rangefinder.

I read that in the manual but couldnt move the wheel, so a didnt forced because i was afraid of doing something wrong. Now i mooved the wheel and adjusted to frame 4.

Hope tomorow i can bring her how and shoot something.

Sorry I've been out of touch.
My UAZ is up and running. We had to put a new vacuum tank on it.
Now to get other work done on it like new shocks
No, I do not have it in the US.
We always joke how it would be a great "Soccer Mom" car!!!

I and it are in Central Asia. (it stays here- I get to go home in August)
I use it every summer for my expeditions

Congratulations, I have that very same combo! I just got back from a day's worth of street shooting and I still haven't tired of it, after 2.5 months and 20 rolls or so.

I did something yesterday that I should've done A LONG TIME ago: I had the never-ready case modified at a shoemaker's shop to make the top and bottom detachable. No more flippy-floppy lid when I shoot and I couldn't be happier! Silly russians and their silly design decisions...

By the way, would any one of you fellow Jupiter-8 owners know where I can find a proper lens hood? Preferably one that is square in shape?

The Jupiter 8 takes a 40.5 filter and there are round screw in hoods available in that size. I don't know about square hoods and they would not work if the front of your lens rotates. Congratulations on your Zorki 4. I have always thought they were one of the best Soviet cameras. Joe

Thank you for the quick reply! The square hoods look so elegant on Leicas so I guess I was a little partial. :) The round ones aren't too bad either, though. I've been browsing eBay a few minutes now and found quite a lot of very cheap Chinese hoods, for only 7$ and no shipping. E.g. http://ebayitem.com/120727405299

Is there any reason not to buy one?

I've got a couple of them. I bought two for a particular reason, and it paid off. I wanted a hood for my J-12 and J-3, and wasn't sure how consistent the manufacture of the hoods would be with regard to how the vents line up with the start of the 40.5 thread. It turned out that each of the two hoods I got only suited one lens, in the sense that a vent would land in the right place and not block the corner of the viewfinder. When on the other lens, a 'spoke' between vents lined up in front of the viewfinder. I put a little label on each, indicating when lens it worked with, such that I could see through the vent.

They were 7gbp each, no postage, and took ages to arrive (about 3 weeks). Free post from Hong Kong means very slow post, but well worth it if one is prepared to wait. They fit fine, and seem robust enough. The ones I got are also threaded at the outer edge with what appears to be a standard 52mm filter thread, so I got a couple of clip-on lens caps to suit that size. Handy if one is paranoid about burning the shutter curtains - you can pop the cap on if you aren't shooting for a little while, rather than have to take the hood off and fit the normal cap.

Thanks! Just ordered one for 7 USD :)

This, and the ever-ready case modification I had made, will definitely make the camera more friendly to shoot with!
