Are You Afraid To Carry A Leica?

I'm not afraid. Here in Madrid, nobody really knows what a Leica is. When I go out with my wifes Pana FZ5 all the little thieves in the citycenter observe me. Not so with the Leica. Thieves are very close to the market. And the market today is digital and not an old analog M6. Even when I had the Digilux 1 and later the Digilux 2 most people thought it was an old analog rarety.

Go ot, keep it well and shot, and shot, and shot.

Assorted thoughts:

Most educated people have never heard of a Leica - I certainly doubt some street criminal will have a clue. It doesn't even have a zoom lens for chrissake.

If anyone notices the black tape you put on it they'll probably figure that it says "Nikon" underneath anyway. Wouldn't a "Konica" sticker (or somesuch) be a better idea anyway?

Guys, just face it - pretty much nobody else wants your Leica

In the unlikely event that someone does make a grab for it I guess I'd just introduce it to his forehead at high speed and then see if he's still interested...

My vote goes to a "Hello Kitty" sticker and some green-and-yellow electrical tape. Too absurd to have any value.

I love that it's always the older generation (over 50) on the forum who are violent in their response 'more worried what would happen to the person who tries to steal it'.

Course I wonder how many people here willingly confront the nasty people and take a photo of them. I got caught out once, and the 6' 4" guy stormed up. But some careful body language and standing my ground with good words solved that issue/ Same thing when I was stood alongside a nice bridge over a concrete path, and a chav jumped off his bike and started shouting at me.

I think it's true. The better you can turn a situation around, and the most aware you are of your surroundings, the safer you are. I always pull my bag in front of me on the Tube or in any busy or unknown area. Then again once the camera is in-hand, theres nothing valuable left in the bag!

George who started the thread uses a Billingham bag and I was having a go at him. ;) I mean, they are a bit on the poncy side don't you think? Aren't they designed to look like you'd just been out on the moors shooting sparrows and sticking them in the bag or something?

I think I owned a Land Rover Discovery when I first bought the Billingham bag. ;) Nevertheless, it's a good bag.

"Hello Kitty"? That's good. But then my daughter would always be stealing it. How about "Mossad" - nobody's even gonna think about touching that...

That's why one needs a khaki Billingham for the country, but a black one for the town. Heavens, I thought every gentleman knew that

Bah - I always get derisory "school bag" comments about my Billingham.

The good thing about LowePro's success, I suppose.

One nice thing about the all brass body of a leica is it will make a serious dent in someones skull if they try to rob you. You might have to have the RF realigned but they'll have to have their head realigned too.

I dont worry about is specifically but do take care as a 'photographer' in general. I dont get excited over the chrome vs black personally feel that black looks less like something unusual.

If you dont carry your leica, you should not bother owrning one. It is there to take pictures after all. I worried when I first got it then took opposite reasoning thinking that having spent all this money I would be mad not to use it like any other. There are loads of ways of carrying a little M discreetly with lenses in inside pockets etc or you can use a beaten up bag.

Use it. Take great pictures.
