Are You Afraid To Carry A Leica?

Consider that perhaps 1 out of 100 people have even heard the name "Leica," and that even less know that it is a camera brand. Infrequently, someone will ask me about my camera, but only on a couple of occasions has anyone correctly identified it as a Leica without being told. The chance that a mugger will target you specifically because you carry a Leica is vanishingly small, red dot or no.

I agree w/ B Sweeny...most people don't know what it is anyway. I have an M2 and MP do the red dot issue doesn't really concern me. If anything people who know the brand are either curious or derisive. I've had snide comments made about the price of the gear when I'm out with it. Recently at Photo LA I was standing in line w/ my little MP strapped over my back and I noticed a couple staring. I didn't pay much attention until my friend who arrived after me and was standing behind the couple overheard the remarks they were making about me "showing off" etc. Later my buddy told me about the remarks and how embarassed they were when they realized he had heard them and was my friend because I walked over to him and started conversing. Just goes to show: Leica stirs strong and diverse emotions.

If anyone notices the black tape you put on it they'll probably figure that it says "Nikon" underneath anyway. Wouldn't a "Konica" sticker (or somesuch) be a better idea anyway?

What we need is some tape that reads 'ghetto'...

Simon,
I think the cost of Billingham bags puts them into a category that many of us would like it, but don’t want to plunk down the bucks (at least for me). I have an old Domke bag that I used for awhile, but of late, I’ve moved to diaper bags, they look generic. The ones I have do not hold a lot, but they are working well for me these days.

Krosya,
You did the right thing. There is almost always a questionable egg somewhere. I think the chief knew about them already and suggested the right course of action. They can make your life hell for silly little things. I never had a problem with NYC cops, here in Chicago, I’ve run into a few more that have the same approach to life as yours did.

All,
I stopped carrying either of my Leicas about 9 years ago as my first son was starting to, well move. I was worried about him breaking something by accident. Tried several solutions and stayed with a Bessa T and some other (not new Leica) glass. That worked well for years. Now I am going back to my Leicas.
When I lived in NYC (1980-1989), I carried a camera around a lot. The last six years I carried a M4P or M6 everywhere (from the Battery up north of Central Park a ways, even into Alphabet Land) without a second thought. I agree that if you blend in, do not walk like an easy mark, it makes a real difference. As much as I love my Leicas, my kids, wife and life come first. Most of the time I carried a small black Leica hard case (with the red target) markered out, but the bodies still had their targets and markings uncovered.
There was a time when I carried way too much SLR stuff with me and I looked a bit, well overloaded. As I mentioned, I have a few small black bags that blend in anywhere.
