The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV is a tool psychiatrists use to make diagnoses.

I'm suggesting this addition for
😛
CAMERA ADDICTION DISORDER

A maladaptive pattern of camera use causing impairment or distress.
With
* (1) Tolerance: A need for markedly increased use of camera to achieve intoxication or desired effect.

* (2) Withdrawal:
The characteristic withdrawal syndrome: Craving, thinking about the cameras day and night, sneeking to the dry box to fondle the camera in the middle of the night...

* (3) The camera use is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended (loss of control).

* (4) There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control camera use (loss of control).

* (5) A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the camera, camera accessories and lenses (preoccupation).

* (6) Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of need to use camera (continuation despite adverse consequences).

* (7) The camera use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by continued shooting. (adverse consequences).

Hi, my name is Frank and I'm coo-coo for cameras.

I'd like to add 2 more diagnostic symptoms:

1.) the perceived need for more than 1 or 2 cameras
2.) excessive posting to a cerain on-line photography forum

😛 Hi, I'm Richard and I am a cameraholic. I can't go a day without taking a photo or thinking about one. I have more than one, many more than one of differnt sizes and styles. I can't get enough... 😎

As the proud owner of 113 SLR's, 166 RF's, 35 TLR's, etc. I can enequivocably say I'm not an addict and don't suffer from CAD. I just prefer to spend all my waking hours scanning E**y, pawn shops/thrift stores, flea markets/yard sales and snapping oodles of often mundane but interesting to me shots. What was that question again??

i was doing ok with just simple SLR equipment. The most expensive thing I had were 2 Ls - 70-200/4 and 17-40/4. Then, I realized those things were too big. So, I wanted something smaller and less likely to be stolen - R2 with a 35/2.5. But then, the craving for low light hit, so i ordered a 50/1.2, but I couldn't stop there. I needed nice portraiture, so i got a Jupiter 11. Now, jorge sold me a Zeiss 50/1.4. Needless to say, i am bust. 🙁

You have to watch out there. With that much equipment, it's difficult to argue that the cameras are all for personal use. You might get nailed for possession with intent to distribute.

"Intent to distribute"... not likely. You'll have to pry them out of his cold dead hands 😀

Every time I see friends or family, they ask me prying questions about the "new" camera in my hands. "This? I have had this for a while, uh, yeah." 😉 I overheard talk about an intervention.

Intent to distribute, hmmmm, I like that, only the distributing I do is one to this shelf, one to that cabinet, one to my bag for tomorrow's shooting, and of course one to my "Fix when time is available" pile. Last three lenses I bought were 1 Osawa 80-200 FD with loose front element (fixed easily enough), 1 Focal 80-200 FD (huge fungus infestation), and 1 Carl Meyer Moviar 6 in. f3.5 (lens hack project candidate for my next days off). See, one user, one parts or fix later, and one hack project. Between these and yard sales next weekend, my time is already almost all spoken for. Except I just bought 274 rolls of 100 film that are calling my name too. I can quit any time I want to, honest I can.

You guys ain't esoteric enough... but then, you're not basket cases either. When I hear people talk about very strange pieces of gear... then, and only then, can you consider something like CAD.

Otherwise, you're just nuts about cameras! 🙂

There... don't you feel better now? I do! I don't have addictions of this kind. Just a few cameras that my wife brushes off the dining room table, the living room, her studio, the basement, the breakfast nook, our porche... and they end up in my studio.

I keep wondering how come they show up all over the house... 😕

But then, you see, I can stop any time! 😀 And so can you, right? 😉

Right... 🙄

Count me in.

Two cameras on the way, another on bid at the Bay, 40-some odd rolls of film, and all cameras are usable.

Hi. My name is Stephanie and I'm a cameraholic.

oh, sorry. my mind was in such lala land that i thought of zebras (porsche) instead of horses (porch) when i heard hoofbeats. 😀

Being broke and destitute can do strange things with the human mind, it seems. 😛
