You should be able to see it, it definitely works. Just turn IS off, and have a look at a subject through the EVF and give the camera some really small vigorous shakes. Then turn it on and do the same thing - you should feel like the image in the EVF is almost 'floating' in an abnormally smooth way.

thanks gavin, appreciate the reply. i definitely know it works, as i can absolutely see in the results.

so from your reply, the effect kicks in when you actually 'shake' the cam to see the effect, as opposed to noting the effect on one's (or better said, 'my') normal movement while focusing. thats too bad, because in reading about it i thought it would be a big boon to focusing a tele lens, like a 135 (270). when focusing these, esp at magnification, ones (read 'my') natural movement is violently exagerated in the vf, making focusing difficult. i thought you would see the IS effect in that situation, and i dont. i turn IS on and off and theres no difference in the shaky view.

That's for the ones who simply don't know or don't care (same weight in vote, in my view).
 
Thanks Gabriel M.A. for juxtaposing the E-M5 and the Nikon. The DSLR is a hideous monster isn't it?

I am warming to the E-M5 because of its reported performance, but I still am not happy with Olympus's decision to use DSLR styling. I prefer RF look. At this point I will keep my E-P1 and see if some of these improvements filter their way into a future Pen model.
 
The OM-D seems to be a little impressive camera. I am in particular impressed by the video capabilities and quality. My hat is off to Olympus.

I would only like to see bigger EVF (0.58x is really a bit too little) with a bit more pixels.

First, it was Gavin, not Gabriel who compiled the size comparison.

Secondly, it's not a DSLR styling, OM is Olympus' *film* SLR from the 70's. It's an SLR styling. IMHO there is no "styling" in a DSLR, other than *big*. :)
 
Had black body-only order on Amazon since Feb. I saw BH had 14-42mm kit in stock (thanks to 43rumors report) so I pulled the trigger. It's now back to backordered again on their site. Mine should be here tomorrow.
 
First m4/3 camera that looked like it could be a winner. But at nearly $1800 for camera and kit lens (where I live) its a definite no go.

Never understand these posts about wanting a rangefinder look vs. a SLR "hump".

My understanding is that the prism like bump on the OM-D (EM5) houses the new 5 axis IBIS system. Did I hear wrong? And am I wrong to be more concerned about the images rather than the style. Well perhaps... because I do like that with the grip, it looks like the OM1's and 2's I have been packing around for many years.

I do shoot rangefinder. I have a very nice Kneb (kiev) which takes wonderful pics. And, I do try to get a roll through it at least once every two years. Not into all the current pseudo rangefincer bodies.

I like my E-PL1 PEN, but not because I can stroke myself into it's "rangefinder-like" body, but because it's produces the sharpest OOC jpegs of any camera I have tested for the last few years.
 
Still hesitant about EVFs... I understand the one in the OMD is supposed to be one of the better ones, but the little I've played with them (Fuji X100) I've been disappointed by how they transformed the photographic experience to the point I would rather accept the compromises of a reflex mirror in order to preserve the analog viewing experience.
 
Got the OM-D on Friday, very happy with it. BUT, having an issue with the magnify function - I put the magnify function on the FN1 button so I can have easy access to the smaller AF box. It worked fine for a couple of days and now it's only sporadically working. Then I assigned it to the FN2 button, same sporadic functioning.

I know there are a few OM-D users on RFF - anyone else have this issue? Someone else on one of the M43 boards confirmed having the same issue, I'm guessing it's not only us. I'm going to try to update the firmware tonight and see if that fixes it.
 
dean, it may, i say 'may', not be a problem. when you are in a vf view that has say the 'level' or shows over/under exposure, you have to push the Fn button twice to get the green magnify box in the vf, then again to actually magnify. i dont knw why this is the case. also, once the green box is visible, turning the wheel takes it from 14x-10x-7x-5x.

thanks for the input tony. a few more people on the other board have also noticed the issue. i think the problem we are having is that it seems to be a random number of button presses are needed until the AF box switches to the small one. once it switches we can magnify and change the amount of magnification, but getting it to switch in the first place can take a lot of button presses, two doesn't seem to do it.
 
oddly enough, a recommendation to "press the button quickly" seems to be working. i'll have to see if works consistently over the next few days, i can't believe it's that simple, lol.
