Autofocus? That's so old school.

...I hate when my friends (who are not into photography) assume that any good photo of mine that I upload online must have been massaged in photoshop for hours.

Are you sure your friends don't mean that as a compliment? It's directly comparable to praising someone for producing quality work in a traditional darkroom.

Not that I wouldn't feel much the same. The truth, though, is that PS gives us the ability to manipulate many more variables than we could ever hope to do at capture time.

Yep, we are almost there, google microsoft photosynth

This is getting crazy, what is next? I bet you will be able to recompose your shot in software in the future. Something similar to Sony sweeping panorama, you'll just have to take 360 "sweep" with your camera and then you'll be able to choose any angle and any composition and aperture from the comfort of your desk. Or even better the camera will choose the best composition, focus etc for you.

As potentially detrimental this technology could be, I can't help but be impressed by it. I know, I know, 'it's the end of photography' and all that fear-mongering, apocolyptic hyperbole, but gee, it's pretty awesome.

The current cropoff HD DSLR's that allow you to 'extract' a 'still/JPEG' from them....
It's almost here. 🙁

Steve.
